I have let mine (5 and 2 1/2) --Use a butter knife to cut soft stuff, like bananas, avocado. --snap beans --my 2 year old likes to sit and collect my peeled stuff and put it in a 'garbage bowl" if I've got nothing else for her to do. --once, after a MAJOR handwashing and NO EATING lecture, I let them help roll meatballs. --pour pre-measured ingredients and stir. I have told my 5 year old what buttons to push for stuff on the microwave. I've also strictly told him he is NEVER to get anything OUT of it himself or do this without asking me. (He has been begging to try to do this...) When is old enough to let them peel? Chop? (I'm not brave enough to put sharp things in their hands...) I have already told them they have to be able to reach the controls NOT standing on anything to use the stove. That'll be about 10 years old LOL ;) What do you let your kids do in the kitchen?
