I had that kind of experience, a couple of times.
The center of earthquake is not in my city, but I can strongly feel it. I was living in the 2nd floor in the college dorm that time, and the build was shaking. I was not scared, because I didn't have earthquake experience before. I just wonder why the building is shaking. I saw a lot of people run out the building and I followed. After getting out the Dorm, I learned that is a aftershock.

Well personally I had the chance to experience one myself in the Seattle, WA USA area in February 2001, and it was not the funnest of experiences at all. I was sound asleep even and got woke up with the ground shaking and our Cat going crazy and it was not a fun experience at all. The only thing you can really do when you experience one is start Praying that no one or nothing gets seroiusly damaged as well.
