I love you all, but go away!

Not you personally. I'm talking about the neighbourhood cats that keep ripping open our garbage bags and then spreading the debris all over our deck and garden. It's absolutely disgusting and we don't know what to do about it! They're making the mess quicker than we can clean it up. There's currently a mess of peas, slime and god knows what all over our deck. I wish I could take a photo, but I'm not sure where my camera is. You should see it. I'm surprised we haven't got rats out there too. What can we do to deter them? They're lovely, cuddly and sweet and FILTHY. The cats that is, not rats. Eek!

yes, i know what you mean about saying that those alley cats are cute and filthy. in fact, we were forced to adopt some of them way back home when we had a sizeable lot yet for our abode. where we are now, there is no way at all that we can welcome even a single cat. we are housed in a studio type apartment, thus we always shoo away those cats that show up in our place to look for food. what i have been doing in order that our trash is not messed by those unwanted cats? simple. i only keep those non biodegradable ones. those which are of interest to dogs, cats and rats are all disposed of immediately.

It's hard when you'd love to help and adopt more, but can't for financial or spacial reasons. We have a decent house and two indoor cats that have a delicate balance together. We also don't have much money at the moment. Otherwise, I'd love to take in more animals. I don't think I helped matters by befriending a giant tomcat called Harley over the summer. He was always purring for petting and I couldn't help myself when I was out on the deck. We use black plastic bags that the cats just tear into all the time. We have no garage or anything to store them in from week to week unfortunately. I'll have to check if the bags are biodegradable or not.

I've sent my better half out with my bank card (mistake?) to the hardware store to try and find the most Fort Knox-like garbage can he can find!

Maybe put some moth balls around the deck in places where the cats can't get into them, but where the smell will deter them from going anywhere near your deck. This is what we did at the cottage when we had a rabbit problem, and we did not want to hurt the rabbits, just keep them out of our vegetable garden. It worked for us.

Moth balls? That's one I've not heard to try. I may have to keep an eye out for some. Thanks!

you should try and out the garbage bags in a trash can mabey so that way the trash wont be scattered everywhere and you wont have to use chemicals that can potentially hurt the cats
