some of my friends said you have to wear it for as long as you want your teeth to stay straight is this true?

They often recommend that you wear it at night when you go to bed, as for wearing it all the time I think they say for 1 year.

I have braces now. My ortho told me I would most likely have to waer a retainer for 6months to a year to prevent the teeth from going back to the way they where.

I never wore braces, even though the dentist I had as a kid recommended it, but my sister did. Truthfully, unless you have some severe overbite that causes you eating problems or teeth that are deformed looking, I don't get the big deal for braces anyway. When you get older they can fix all this with porcelain teeth and a number of other cosmetic tricks. I wouldn't go years dealing with braces and retainers.

im not sure how long you have to wear it but if you dont like the idea of the regular retainers that people get there are other options like invisible retainer and permenint retainers
