If you want to learn web design, study HTML. Dreamweaver is a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) program that makes designing much easier, because it gives you a preview and does the HTML coding for you. Java is something much much more advanced. It is not the same as javascript. If you want to make web design your career then study HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, MySQL, Flash, and actionscripts. You will also need to know how to use programs such as FireWorks, PhotoShop, and Illustrator.

I concur with the above statements. However, I will add something else here. Each programming language bounces off another in some shape or form. Some well developed web sites use a combination of HTML, CSS stylesheets, Java, and Javascript, while others may use PERL, C++, and PHP. It's better to start off small, at the bottom, and work your way up. There are free tutorials online for Web site designing, the w3c schools being one. You can even find tutorials in books online, in stores, and at your local library. Currently, I'm attending the University of Phoenix online and I'm only months away from obtaining my bachelor's degree in BSIT/WD. I suggest, if you want to make a career out of web site designing, your best bet is to find a nationally accredited college that offers the programs necessary to earn that degree.

If you really want to study web design you should probably study all three of those plus a few others. It takes quite a bit of time to do it right. It all depends on what you want to do. Do you want to study it to do a bit of design for yourself, or do you want to make a career at it?

Hi danoluma, I'm a c++ programmer and as a programmer I know that you have to choose a certain language you want to do, because depending on the programming language, the language is good for a certain type of programming. I know that sounds confusing!?! So depending on the type of website(s) you are planning to make, you have to make a decision on which language you have to do not want to do.
