Does everybody do this or is it just me?

I am wondering if I am way different or if it is common for adults to look ahead and try to keep things stocked in their home? I always try to have toilet tissue, catsup, mayonaise, eggs, milk, etc. on hand. Always thinking ahead and trying to think and keep up on what might be needed in the future. Is everyone like this? Do you think it is a learned trate, or is it a characteristic that is nature in most when they get older and are fending for themselves? I think it is a learned trate. What are your thoughts on this subject?

I think it is a passed down trait, or just habitual. Sometimes it's easier to go ahead and stock up on things you need, and then you won't have to pay for them later, and can free up a few dollars. My husband and I don't do this now, but I've been thinking about it.

I think so too. My mom was very good at buying things on special and figuring what was a good deal and so forth. I have been watching this show lately called Hoarders. and it kind of scares me. lol

Oh Hoarders does seem like a scary show, I've only seen a few glimpses of the shoe here and there myself. I'd like to sit down and watch an episode but I suppose I'd do better to record it and then I could watch it later without interruption. It's always great to have friends and family who watch out for deals they know you'd want to take part it, or clip coupons they know you'd like. We have a family member who clips coupons for us.

I like to think I stock up just a tad....I tend not to go overboard...first of all no car to haul the stuff and two, I purposely don't stock up on too much to give me an excuse to get out of the apartment. Two days in a row of staying home is enough for me, otherwise I'd go bananas....LOL

I think it is could be learned or passed down. Some people learn it from thier parents like myself, I stock up because it was always like that when I was growing up and it can also be learned because I know some people who have learned it from me as a result of the advantage of not going shopping too often

Your not alone. I have to agree it's a learned trait. Just from past experiences going to grab that mustard and finding there is none ahh. So yes we do tend to make sure we have extra on stock. I am especially bad at making sure there is extra on toilet paper cleaning supplies and hygiene products.(There must be 3 tubes of toothpaste and 10 new toothbrushes in the linen closet) If I open a bottle of dish soap I better have an extra otherwise it goes on the top of the grocery list.

I think it only good sense to keep the things you used the most on the shelf at all times.

I believe it is a learned trait. My mother always thought ahead of the things we might need and yes stocked them in the house. I do but now that money is tight, I only purchase what we need. I have found that this keeps the house less cluttered looking. I no longer buy two of everything and I am now simply buying for the here and now. Nicer on the pocket book that way. I really don't think its an older thing. I think we learn this from our mothers and I think they learned it from having nothing and hard times. Well that just may be my mothers case anyway... I realized just how much stuff I had after I moved. I had only one truck to move half way across the country. Man, the stuff I sold just to get what I felt we had to keep and could not live without. I tell you I can almost guarantee you have two if not three TV's, bikes, three hole punches, coffee pots, cookie sheets, two or three sheets if not more for each bed you own. 700 picture frames for picture that are not hanging, 14 pairs of shoes that half you don't wear. Clothes that no longer fit. the list is endless. As far as food - Well, I'm sure that most of us have 2 cans of tomato, 2 cans of cream of mushroom, 2 cans of cream of celery in our kitchen not to mention at less two types of cheese. and at least two lbs of hamburger, one chicken and one ham in the freezer. okay, thats enought rambling ... Yes, it is definately Learned.

My mother was like that when I was a child and I'm doing it now. My husband is the same way I think it provides a type of security knowing you have the basics. One thing I hate is running out of tissue soap ketchup and so on Its good to keep stock you never know when you are not able to purchase those things

I think this is a trait that we usually follow from what we encounter at home. Though in some cases, it is about your character and personality. But as I have said it is more of something like influence from people at our home like our mother and our father.

I definitely believe that keeping essential items on hand is a learned characteristic; however, I expect that personality influences how, what, and how much one keeps on hand. How much space one has available to put all those 'extra's' also has an influence on how much is stockpiled. I expect it is past experiences, whether living through a riot where basic items weren't available for days [like my husband did], living through the Great Depression [like my parents did], or even living through being snowed in for a few days at a time [like I did], that reinforce the need to keep essential items on hand. Climate may also influence this behavior, as those living in colder climates would normally have to store food for the winter. In our modern era of convenience stores, many people have not picked up this characteristic, or have let it slide, as it is much easier to keep smaller amounts at home and run to the store when the need arises. However, as a Red Cross disaster volunteer, we teach that everyone should have at least 3 days supply on hand of all essential items, as in the event of a natural disaster [or man-made one for that matter], most people should expect to be on their own for at least 3 days. As someone commented earlier, though, be mindful of expiration dates, as some items have short lives in storage. Rotating through stored items [i.e., using stored items and putting the new items just purchased in storage]will help keep loss of stored items to a minimum.

I come from Depression stock myself. Most things are sealed and ofcourse expiration dates would be a smart thing to watch. I am relatively sure that toilet tissue ( my biggest issue) doesn't have one. haha

I don't do this, the store is only 5 minutes away so I buy things as they are needed.

I think this is learned either from a family member, mostly the mom, or maybe from a past experience. I also like stocking up because I don't like going grocery shopping every so often.

You're not alone I am one like you I tend to stock things needed in the house because I find it more convenient than rushing to the grocery when something is lacking. Especially that I am a very busy person so I want to go to grocery when I have time & I will check it from time to time if their is still enough stocks needed.

I dont bring any of those you mentioned on hand. If i need something i will just buy it to a nearby store. I think there's nothing wrong if you already practised or its your nature. Maybe you really just want to be prepared all the time..

These things are a habit for some while they were growing up but for some I believe its a matter of being prepared for anything. I try to make sure to have enough things for my son in terms of food and vitamins. It is better to have more on that part than to be insufficient.

I think it is something that you learned from your mom when you were growing up. I try to keep a little extra so I do not ever run out of certain things. I am thinking about going to one of those warehouse stores and stocking up on somethings so I will not have to buy some groceries every week.

It is a learned trait, stocking things are good but stocking them in such a quantity that it goes bad for consumption is no good. It is same like burning you money just slowly and steady counting 1 dollar a day.
