Serena Williams was fined a whopping 82,500 for her outburst at the US Open back in August. She also faces a probationary period at the Grand Slam tournament in both 2010 and 2011. I personally think this is an outrageous punishment. I had thought she was going to be fined 10,000 dollars but 82,500 dollars is ridiulous I think. What are your thoughts and or comments, if any?

No Monroe was never fined that high. They said this was a record amount of a fine ever. So I just wonder why because it was her first offense. Monroe did it all the time. I could see a $10,000 fine but 82,500 is really crazy. I wonder if there is a double standard when it comes to the sexes. Thanks for responding.

I think she truly crossed the line and it's good to know that no matter who you are the sport's rules still apply. No one should be able to mistreat another in the manner she did.

I agree but why so high of a fine? They said it was a record high fine ever in the game of tennis. If I recall Monroe did this all the time when playing the game. Why all of sudden on her first offense the fine is so high. There has to be more to it I think then we know. Thanks for responding.

lelin1123, For the record, Serena is being fined U$175,000 for her recent outburst at the recent US Open tournament. I just do not think that the fine is being too heavy here when she is already won U$320,000 for getting to the US Open semi-final and earned U$6.5 million prize money this year. So, the fine is not really considerable for her. In all fairness, I think the ATF just wants to put a deterrent to such misconduct from the players. I just hope there will not be such outbursts in the future. Take care and compliments of the season.

lelin1123, I think the both of us are errant in between, as the Washington Posts has a clearer explanation on how the both of us are being wronged here: "According to the news release issued by the Grand Slam committee, which supervises competition at the sport's four majors, Williams was technically fined $175,000, which includes $10,000 she was fined in the immediate aftermath of the offense. That fine, however, has been reduced by half, to $82,500, provided she does not commit another major offense at any of the majors through 2011." Sorry for my mistake. P.S. My errant was due to a report from another article reference, which did not have the technical reduction. Ref: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/sport/serena-williams-fined-190000-for-her-outburst-in-us-open-semi-final/story-e6frg7mf-1225805931320

No sorry you got the numbers wrong. She was fined $82,500 but if she has another outburst she will then be fined $175,000. Its like a warning do it again and the fine goes up.
