I have had a lot of managers in my jobs and now I am one myself after years of working underneath managers. The worst managers I have had are the one's who try and be your friend. I think a manager needs to be able to man manage learn what makes someone tick and then get the best out of them, but I also think managers are not there to be friendly and neither should they, they should be there to push the staff on and to be a figure of authority. The best managers I have worked under where the ones I called all sorts behind their backs. The worst managers were the ones I liked as I could get away with doing very little work didn't really motivate and push me on.

I agree with baps, a manager should be a figure of authority you don't need to like your manager but he should be able to push you and get the best out of you

Hi benny: i agree with you when you say that a manager is the authority and sometimes you can not stand some of his/ her actions but i think it's more than that. You don't necessary need to love your manager but you can not hate him/her. When people hate what they're doing the environment in a department it's always bad.

Hi niuniu: to me a real leader and a manager is not necessary the most intelligent guy of the group but the one that knows how to understand the group feelings because he or she need to inspire people to do their best in their jobs and to work together as a team. Thanks for making this question. Have a nice day. Alvaro

A manager should be kind. He should also be nice. He should also probably be a good problem solver. He should be able to demand from people without over-exhilerating them. Yet I find that this is a common theme today in work. I however am out of work because of schizophrenia. I used to work and have managers. They were OK. To be successful you have to make money. Also I think that they can be intimidating. Are they supposed to be? Probably. I was sort of comfortable. I didn't talk much. But wanted to. I think that if they work hard and expect others to work hard then it'll work. I wouldn't be a good manager even though I thought so at one time. But the great undertones of life pulled me under and now I'm incapable.

I think a successful manager needs to exercise his leadership to his team.Being abig boss all the times will not be a successful mananger. He is a leader who can at least communicate his idea, goal and plan to his followers.Other than that,he needs to know how to motivate his people to finish the job.He alos needs to be a person who will know how to encourage his team members andcare about their feeling as well.Especially in today's world.A good manager must create a win-win co-operation for his team to get the job done.Although good manager with all the above qualities is hard to find in today's world, but at least we will try our best to be one if we ever have a chance to be a manager.
