Would you apply for a job posted on Craigslist?

I always hear about Craigslist, but I only personally know a couple of people who have used it, usually for buying/selling things and apartment hunting. One of them uses it to apply for jobs, and his experience has been positive (though he hasn't found a job yet). However, Craigslist is also known for scams, and recently, the "Craigslist Killer." Recently I've been browsing job postings on Craigslist, and I've come across a few that interest me, but I'm nervous about providing personal information to someone "out there." Additionally, some of these jobs are out-of-state or do not provide their names or actual contact info in the ads (just have the generic Craigslist address), making it difficult to verify their authenticity. If you were or are job hunting, would you feel safe using Craigslist? How would you protect yourself and your identity when contacting the poster/prospective employer? If you've used Craigslist before to hunt for jobs, then please feel free to share your experience!

Are you not worried about spammers, scammers, identity theifs, and other criminals, MrKennedy? Or maybe you have only had positive experiences when applying for jobs on Craigslist? I would love to hear the reason for your faith in the site! :)

I think that using Craiglist for job hunting is okay. I have actually used it for posting up my resume and also for applying to certain jobs, and I have found a few good jobs and some have contacted me. I completely understand where you may become skeptical about running into those scam type of jobs. I too get alot of those. Something that may help you out when noticing jobs that are scams and that they are not legit, are the ones that are out of your area. I have noticed that and I think if a job is interested in hiring you then they would possibly call you on your number or send you an email stating that they are located in your area. I personally would not deal with anyone on craigslist that is not in my area. I mostly just ignore those and move on. Don't waist your time on those out of area oppurtinities. Another thing that you should look for is what type of job that they are offering you and how much you are going to get paid for. Like if its an easy job but they want to pay you alot of money, then its probably not legit. Like one job I had run across that responded to my resume was something about babysitting and they had offered to pay me $900 a week. I knew that wasn't legit and then the family was out of my country. So yeah, you have to be careful and don't fall for any scams.

No, I wouldn't apply for one. A lot of internet marketeers use craigslist to make money. They say they have the perfect job for you. A videoclip or something or even an online poker event for free whereupon they request you to fill out some forms. In the end all you are filling out is actually a CPA offer netting them a few dollars per sign up... grr...

Hi celestialbloom, Yes i've applied for a job as well as posting jobs at craiglist. From what i experienced, most of the employers are legit, but yes, some of them just scams, do your due diligence and read the posts carefully, therefore you could differenciate the real and the fake one. For me actually, i don't mind sharing my personal info to people i don't know, but for finding jobs purpose only, so yes be careful before sending your data.
