Drops of rain?

Why does rain comes in drops not in continuous stream?

Hi! I think because of the big distance it takes to fall on the Earth.I mean maybe it rains on streams from the clouds, but the atmosphere pressure and the high speed of it, makes the rain streams falls into drops. It's a very not-scientific answer, but I'm not acquaint with the conceptions.
