Why we say to kill time?

We have often heard or ourselves had to kill the time .But why we use it ,Is it becuse we really a that time want to kill the time as it is coming in our way and our destiny,so what is your reason that this phrase is so popular?

The term is usually used when we have alot of time on our hands and we want to spend it and make it go quickly. "I'm gonna kill time and watch tv" for example. I try not to use this as I feel it has a negative connotation. Time is something very precious, when ever second is gone we have lost more than a gem in our life. so each second, and moment should be utilised at the best of ones ability because it will never return

yes time is precious and thats why I was asking this question ,why to kill time.

Hi. I think that it means we have to chase time and not the other way. Fill your time with full of benefit activities so that you'll noticed that you don't have enough time in a day. It just like 24hours is not enough for us in a day. We need more. By practising that, your life become so meaningful that you can settle a lot of good things. This was just my opinion, what others like to say about this?

ya,it is true we must utilise time ,but here it has been said that why this phrase to kill the time? why not something other ? like to cut down the time
