What's The Brush For At The Sides Of An Escalator?

Have you ever noticed that there are brushes at the sides of an escalator? I don't know if all escalators have them but most do. What are they for? My guess is for cleaning shoes so every time I ride one I glide my shoes on the sides and get it brushed as the escalator moves.

I think they are installed mainly for safety reasons especially for the children who are prone to accidents. But maybe it can also be used to clean up dirts from passersby.

Hi. The same question that keeps on playing in my mind. My guest were also to make sure the escalator were clean up by those brush. Maybe at least it can brush away smaller piece of thrash so that it wont stuck on a step of the each escalator. By the way, the brush were so cool. Sometimes I even use it to brush my shoe. What ever it is, the main purpose of it were to keep the escalator clean. It is because very difficult for the cleaner to clean up the escalator every time it operate. They maybe have to stop it for a while just to clean it...:
