The new Star Trek, is it actually any good?

I've not seen it yet as I'm not a huge Star Trek fan but I hear really conflicting things about it. Almost everyone I know has seen the thing and many of them say it is great but then I meet a lot of people who say they have seen it and it is complete rubbish. It seems to rather divide people. Is it worth watching at all?

My husband is the "traditional" Star Trek fan. He could probably recite the scripts of past films and TV series if you asked him to...so I've become more interested in it too. For "purists" like him the new Star Trek film is flawed but, on the other hand, if you are new to the Star Trek experience then wathing it will become more of a "being entertained" exercise as opposed to comparing it with what's happened in the past. Personally, I prefer the older films and I hate the fact that William Shatner is not in this latest one (but he has his reasons) lol.

William Shatner couldn't really be in it as it's set back at the start, you even see the birth of Kirk, so they needed someone young to play Kirk in his early 20's. There are rumors on the net that Shatner will appear in the next movies

William Shatner (from what hubby tells me) fell out with other cast members years ago so he wouldn't have appeared in the new film anyway, due to the grudges he has...something about being a major star, should have the most money, that type of thing. It's like they are all ganging up on him or something because Nimoy "endorsed" the film, probably because they gave him a part in it...and he's not gonna argue about the content if he's getting a fat wad of cash.

I thought they didn't want Mr Shatner in the new one? Yes maybe it will be weird to see different people playing the characters, but I don't think that would bother me that much. I'm not sure I was into the older films all that much but they were okay. I preffered the tv series stuff but I can take or leave it all a bit to be honest. I like the optimism it has tho and it's great that it is kind of progressive and forward looking in some ways. I didn't think much of the last series for that reason tho, it felt really backward. hmmmm

I enjoyed the new movie, it goes right back to the start, so we get the original characters with the up to date effects etc. The only thing that I disliked about this film & I feel the same about many modern movies is they go all out with action & special effects but they compromise on the story. It is very fast paced so I had to watch it twice to take it in. But it has potential to start a new chain of Star Trek movies & because of the storyline in the current movie the time line was changed & this opens up the potential for bringing the Borg in a lot sooner so kirk will get to confront them (I read about this on a site discussing the release of the next movie)

I saw it awhile i go. Im not a star trek fan but it was not bad. It had good effects and everything. I like the scene with the giant monster, wish there was more of that though.... Its worth watching so you probably should watch it.

Giant Monster eh! Sounds fun! I heard they ended up just battling a really big cloud or something, and that well... but that was off the people who didn't like it. Big monster sounds like it could be fun but please don't tell me too much and ruin it!

with all the opinions here i didn't like the idea of hollywood replacing the only kirk and spock but i'll give it a try, it's been 2 years thinking about it, if they tried to do a good work gene roddenberry would have loved that
