What do you NOT look for in an anime/manga series?

Most of the time we're always talking about certain criteria or things we look for when choosing an anime or manga series. Things like the art, story, genre, or whatever. But what are some of the things you don't want to see in some series. For me, the main one would be the excessive fanservice. That really turns me off. I hate watching or reading something only to encounter a panty shot every five seconds. I really don't know how some people can enjoy that. Those type of stories hardly ever have any good plots to go with it. It's all about the fanservice.

Well I like almost all kind of anime but I really hate manga. Why... because there's is no emotion and action if you know what I mean. Well what I don't want to look in an anime is an anime that doesn't have comedy. Because I love anime that has some funny scenes plus action, romance. If the anime doesn't have comedy well I won't watch it XD

Comedy huh? It's always good to have some comedy to lighten up the mood, even in some of the most serious anime. I'm trying to think if I've watched anything that doesn't have any comedic moments at all and I can't really think of anything. Maybe the Rurouni Kenshin Trust and Betrayal OVA but that's it, I think. But you're right there. I would hate to watch something with no comedy. It'd be too dramatic or depressing or something along that line.

"I'LL TAKE A POTATO CHIP -- *heavy breathing* -- AND EAT IT!" ^ Even the most serious anime have some funny moments

I don't really like panty shots either, I mean its one thing to have a really funny scene were this and that happens and it ends up being a running joke in the series (k-on!) and another thing to just flash pants in front of the screen randomly because suddenly there's a lot of wind and the girl's miniskirt is too short to cover her pants or something, I'm not even sure if that's supposed to draw attention (really now, who would watch something just because it has panty shots? on second thought I don't wanna know) or done just 'cause its kind of like a tradition...and its not only that, sometimes in anime someone *accidentally* gropes a female character because he was lost in thought and wasn't paying attention to what he was doing or whatever other reason, I mean, who is that type of thing directed to anyway? otaku? there are people who find this stuff arousing? another thing I don't like is really slow-paced stuff...I loved serial experiments lain but stuff like natsume yujiinchou are too boring...if the anime is not interesting I will most likely drop it... also I prefer to avoid shows with a lot of filler and shows whose characters are uninteresting and there's generally not much character development I want the things I watch to have a solid story and characters and animation quality is important too but not to the point that I won't watch something if its animation is not top quality unless its boring...

I know what you mean. And believe me, there are a bunch of weirdos out there who are into the whole panty shot thing (you see them all the time in anime forums). I'm also not a fan of slow paced shows. If I don't find the first episode interesting I usually don't continue the series. As for Natsume Yujiinchou, the manga was actually pretty decent. And fillers are a turn off, especially if they start popping up really early in a series and then frequently afterwards.

since i'm female, the panty shots are not my thing, but i agree with the excessive fan-service thing. i find it more useful in a comedic way then in a 'guy spends most of the manga/anime with no shirt on' sort of way. it's funny to me since not a lot of 'real' guys look like that. i do look at the artwork, some mangas for me i can't read well if i don't agree with the artwork style. i try, but then it becomes to distracting for the story. i'm not talking about 'old school' artwork because i've read manga's which take place back in the 90's but there's some styles that are just painful to my eyes. as of the other things, of course i have my taste like i prefer things with a female lead compared to a male lead. but i don't like slow moving storylines. if i can't catch on in the first chapter or two it normally gets tossed.

Hey there, sorry it took a while to respond back. I have to somewhat agree with the art. I'm pretty open minded when it comes to anime/manga art but there's just some that do not agree with me at all. It's hard to concentrate on the story when I'm too busy trying to decipher the art.

Haha...can't say much for the yaoi since I'm not really into it. But the depressing stuff is not something I look for either.

The top 5 things I'm not looking for in anime series is... 1. Stupid Japanese humor involving the sweat bead and falling over upside down where you only see their feet sticking up twitching all because they are embarrassed or something? 2. Comic relief characters in serious fighting anime's (aka the little bear doll in Bleach) 3. Too much introspective philosophic crap 4. Waiting 4 episodes to see how one fight turns out (dbz or naruto style) 5. Bad CGI/animation mash ups

Wow, that's very specific. I can agree with a few of the ones you mentioned, especially the annoying comic relief character and that isn't just for fighting anime either. And those shounen series are really good at dragging out their fights, I'd be happy if it ended in four episodes but that's usually not even the case. It's typically longer since they have to go on and on with their plans and life story or whatever. But I actually don't mind the first one you mentioned as long as it isn't overdone, like once every 5 seconds or so.

i don't look for the one where the producers want to attract kids to watch it. I feel i don't like animes that lack common sense.I mean i know they want to let the viewers know how or what is happening but, i seems that they sometime don't know themselves what age group are they trying to attract.

Huh. There's really not much I don't look for in an anime/manga series except incestual relationships which really disturbs me. XD Unless its fanservice-y type relationships like the Hitachiin twins, and they are of the same gender. Oh and I have to like the art. . .if the art doesn't appeal to me I wont watch it lol.

I can agree with that. I can't remember what the show was but I recall making the mistake of picking up a show that had some incest themes going on. It was really disturbing and hard to wrap my mind around the show.

I agree on fan service, when it gets to the point where there are more underwear shots then shots of anything that moves the plot on I'm done. Really more then one an episode and I'm probably done. Other then that, high school or other school related shows have an uphill battle for me. I'm tired of stories that feature school kids.

I'm kind of in the same boat on the high school related shows. It seems like if you've seen one you've pretty much seen it all. But the sad thing is that those are the type of shows that seem to be popping up lately.
