I am really fascinated with the structures and components of an Onion which makes a person cry whenever it is being chopped. Have you tried chopping Onions? It did made you cry right? Or nowadays, you are immune with it? Kindly share your experience... I'm kinda curious. xD

I do have tears dripping down my cheek whenever i am chopping onions before, that was when i was still young. At that time, i seldom do cooking for my family, so i seldom handle the chopping of onion, garlic and ginger as well. Now, since i am married and have own family, i used to do cooking everyday. I think i had been immune to it, so no more tears dripping down whenever i do chop the onion now. Sometimes, when you had been chopping onion everyday, you don't eyes and nose seems have been immune to it, too.

Hi there myfb2009. I guess your pretty right. When you do it almost everyday, you would really get immune with it. By the way, when you were young, you have tears whenever you chop onions right? What do you do so that you would get rid of those tears? Do you wash your eyes with warm water? Anyways, thanks for your response and thanks also for dropping by.

Well, usually i don't wash my eyes with warm water. I would take a piece of handkerchief and wet it into ice-cold water. And i would lap and place the ice-cold handkerchief into my eyes which are pain with tears. Believe me, the pain will gone very soon....

Wow. I've never thought of using cold water to treat such pain. I would surely try that solution you have said when I have again my tears from onions. Thanks. xD

No because I have an immunity to Onions. I have been around onions and have eaten onions so much, that my body has become immune to them. I don't cry at all when I cut onions.

I love onions, and I have always loved onions, and there were times when I used to tear up when cutting them, but over the years because I dealt with onions so much, I grew immune to the smell and so I stopped tearing up around them. If you don't love onions, it is harder to deal with them.

Hi there rogue13xmen13. Is that true? I'm not totally a fan of onions that's why I don't eat too much of them. But if you would get immune with tears while chopping onions because of that, I would definitely eat a bunch of Onions. xD Anyways, thanks for your response and thanks also for dropping by.

Hi, skbrence. Yes, I do cry when I chop onions. It is something that normally happens to me. When I was shedding burning tears, I opened the freezer in the refrigerator and I stuck my head in it for about two minutes. The coolness eased my burning watery eyes. I have to stop what I am doing and walk around because of the burning sensation from the onions.

Hi there cream97... Yes, it is really natural for us to cry whenever we chop onions because these onions do release chemical fumes that hurt the eyes... Does doing such thing inside the refrigerator ease the pain of the eyes? I have never heard such thing... Anyways, next time, I would try doing so. xD By the way, thanks for your response and thanks also for dropping by.

Tear may fall down, it is not easy to control it. I try to make a long distance and still not avoid the tear. Now i have to cut it quickly.

Hi there kevinll. Well, chopping onions quickly would really release it's fume much often and faster. I would suggest wearing eyeglass/sunglass so that you can somehow protect your eyes from these fumes.

There are three types of tears. Firts is Basal tears which lubricate the eye, and help to keep it clear of dust. Second is Emotional tear or crying or weeping tear which increased lacrimation due to strong emotional stress, suffering, mourning, or physical pain. And the third is Reflex tears which results from irritation of the eye by foreign particles, or from the presence of irritant substances such as onion vapors, tear gas or pepper spray in the eye's environment. I dont think we can be immune from crying while chopping onions. Yes, I always cry when I'm chopping onions.

Hi there maria1081. Those type of tears you have mentioned were our lesson in our Psychology class so I already know those. Anyways, thanks also for that kind of response to help out those who doesn't know them. By the way, some cooks got immune with onion tears because of their maybe everyday exposure with onions. I hope we could too. xD Anyways again, thanks for your response and thanks also for dropping by.

there is a way to avoid it. i read this somewhere. chop the onion inside water. in my opinion, i think there is chemical fume in onion and it will make u cry. when u chop it inside water. the fume will dissolve in water and make u more confortable. u may try this out.

Hi there Kent90. I already know this one. But isn't it its hard to chop it underwater since when you put it into a container, you would definitely have hard time chopping it since the knife is so long. xD Anyways, thanks for you response and thanks also for dropping by.

Hi all, I think most people cry when chopping onions. In my family, onions are well loved and so is a big part of my cooking routine. I don't think that the more you chop them, you get immune. Maybe some people do, but not me. I'm 30, and have been cooking and chopping onions since I was 12. I'm sure I'M not immune, because I still cry. A couple of things I have learned over the years is, putting them in the fridge doesn't really make much of a difference. Brown ones are stronger than white ones. And red (or Spanish) ones are not that strong. The weakest I find are the little french e shallots, (the small purple/red ones) The two things I find work the best are, cut a lemon in half then just rub the chopping board a little, enough to see a bit of the juice on it. The other thing is, chop as much as you can stand, and then portion them out and freeze them, that way the next time you need onions you can usually cook them from frozen. Just don't defrost them, because they'll end up soggy. Good luck, hope this helps.
