Blackberries - Good or bad?

This discussion is probably going on everywhere around the world, but recently i've had to make a 27 page report on whether the Blackberry phone is a tool that helps or deprives its users. Here's what i've come to conclude: From studying 4 groups of people, male students, female students, engineers and doctors, we discovered that all of them were using the BBM (Blackberry messenger) almost daily, for different reasons but still. They all had the email function too and some were using the calendar to follow either work and/or studies. But 67.3% of them agreed that it took time and people often yelled at them for using it during conversations, diners, work assemblies and more, degrading their social life. What's your opinion regarding this phone and it's utilities?

I have blackberry 9700 & I use it mainly for work purpose. Just like any other cell phones, if used or mis-used, it can be a bad thing. Outside of work, I use it to enhance my social life rather than let it degrade it. A friend can use blackberry messanger to contact me, ask me a squestion if I'm not able to pick up the phone, I can email my work schedule to a friend so we can set up a time to meet, and in my case, it has over 3mp camera on it so I can take a clear picture of things when I'm out with friends & share it with others. Anything can degrade a social life or family life. Something simple as leaving a tv set on while having a family dinner can be a distraction. Instead of having a meaningful family dinner, one of the family member can be watching tv while sitting on the dinner table. Simple house phone can be a distraction as well. A phone call while we're trying to have some quality family time can be annoying. Regular cell phone's text message can be a disturbance while trying to have a conversation with a friend, not just a blackberry. It's all about how it's used, not what it is.

I've loved the way that you presented your argument and I have chosen it as the best answer for now. Yes, i totally agree on the fact that anything as basic as the TV set or other appliances can become a distraction. But you have got to look at thing more closely: how often do you use your tv? is your tv portable as much as your cellular phone? how many features does your tv have that can distract you from your social life? BlackBerry phones are a vessel to helping businessmen, but they take so much of your time that you don't realize the tiniest details of where your social life is being slowly affected.

Let me start of by saying that I use my tv set every single day. I watch news & weather. I use it to relax after long day of work. Hate to admit it but there were few times I told my daughter, "Hold on, honey! Daddy had a long day & I just wanna sit here & watch tv for a while." As for portability, I've seen some non-blackberry phones that has tv capabilities on them. Sprint & verizon offer few tv shows for a fee. Most laptops can be used as tv. You're talking about people spending way too much time on blackberries but think about what you're saying. People are spending time on blackberries! Let me say it again, PEOPLE are spending time on blackberries. I've seen people spend way too much time on computers, too. I've seen people spend way too much time infront of tv, too. I've seen people spend way too much time playing video games, too. I've seen people spend way too much time eating, too. I've seen people spend way too much time in a bar drinking, too. I've seen people spend way too much time working in their office, too, instead of home. I've seen people spending too much time on the non-blackberry phone yapping away, too, instead of in person. I think you get my point. Everything in our lives can be a distraction from what we consider normal interaction with other people, not just blackberries or tvs or any other appliances, portable or not so portable. Again, it's people's attitude, not what they use.
