Inexpensive internet access for laptops

I have a friend that keeps telling me that his sister got a d-link for her computer so she could have free internet access. I only know of d-link as a brand name for routers. Does anyone know what he might be talking about and please share. Also, if you have any suggestions for me for my laptop connection I would be most happy to hear them. I am getting a laptop and I will need some type of internet access on the go so please share your suggestions on the best deal out there now.
