how to connect internet in ubuntu linux

hi,
Im having an broadband connection in my home .
I have both xp and linux.I use xp to surf.
i dont know how to connect to internet using ubuntu linux
when i saw the network manager the status appears as connected .
But when i open a firefox and start surfing it shows an error page.
Pls tell me a way to get rid of this problem friends

You have mentioned you are using broadband connection. I suppose you know the terms dhcp and its network address. Do you use a static ip or a dynamic ip while in windows?
Try to go to network manager in ubuntu and specify the ip, gateway connection addresses.
I hope this would solve the problems.
