How do you plan your trips?

I usually travel with an agency so I have everything planned out but since that's much more expensive than going somewhere alone, I'll be traveling alone in the future. So I was wondering, how do you plan your vacations? Do you use the internet, or any books? I noticed that there are a lot of different books for the same destination, like Lonely Planet, Rough guides..Which ones do you use? Do you plan everything ahead or do you wait till you get there?

I think lonely planet is the only way to go when you are traveling abroad. Most everyone I know who is a serious traveler uses these books and they are so informative. I definately dont travel alone though but I mostly tavel to the more "dangerous" countries so it is much better to travel in large groups that dont look like tourists.

I usually plan everything on my own. I use the internet a lot, but I also buy a guidebook. My favourite guidebook is Lonely planet, and those books have been very useful for me in the past. There are a couple of other guidebooks that I like, and sometimes I choose to buy a Lonely planet guidebook and a Danish guidebook. The Danish guidebook is okay, but I don't want to use it my only guidebook, because there isn't information about public transportations and things like that. I usually book hotel or hostel rooms online, and I often used the site called Hostelworld when I am looking for a place to stay. I also find information about trains and busses online, and I like to read about the countries that I want to visit(the sights, the culture, the language etc). I usually try to learn a bit of the local language, so that I am able to read the sign and things like that.

I will plan before travel. I will learn the local geography, history and culture. I will book ticket and hotel. I think planning is essential for travelling. If you want to travel to some place, you'd better do enough homework, so that you can avoid wasting your time and missing something special. Internet is great tool to get useful infomation.

When you start out planning your own trip you have to decide what you want to get out of your experience. Do you love museums? Many of the most famous ones will allow you to reserve an entry time so you avoid the line up. Would you like to sit in a cafe, sip coffee and people watch? You can combine a variety of activities to keep it interesting but my advice is for you not to get too ambitious, schedule time to relax. As for guide books, I start by searching online. There are good sites that offer reviews of hotels, tour groups, restaurants, etc. I like to have some things planned (room reservations, transportation), then I make a list of things I'd like to see and do, and then I wing it!
