The east coast was socked in with a monster snow storm this weekend. Being I knew it was coming in I made a list and went grocery shopping for the ingredients for my favorite "comfort foods" or dishes that I like making. I also use the time to experiment with new dishes. I made this really great cream of vegetable soup along with my usual favorites like chili, baked macaroni and cheese and brownies. What are some of your favorite dishes to make when you are snowed in?

Hi, we have a fireplace so if the power goes out, we'll have to cook over the fire and this means hot dogs and marshmallows. But if we have power, then its soups, stews, anything comforting. Best way to eat it is sitting in front of the window looking out. Makes me feel good, but we dont have any huge storms here anymore where we're snowed in and cant go out at all. Canada is used to snow, so schools arent even closed anymore for the most part. Its too bad, its fun to be snowed in sometimes. Glad you had some comfort foods and could try some new dishes. Sounds like you're in the right spirit there.

Magic Bubbles, Now, I just can't not say this but,....with all this snow the east coast has....we just have to....blame it all on Cananda. I hear that you guys don't have enough snow this year and it's being trucked in for the Olympics...We have plenty! Please, take all you want including the new 1 ft. of snow that we are expecting tomorrow afternoon. I always wanted to use my grandmom's fireplace to roast hot dogs and marshmellows, but that was the one thing she put her foot down on.

Haha, thats it, blame it all on us Canada!! We thought you'd like it so thats why we sent it lol. I have snow on the ground where Im at. Im more towards the East coast, Vancouver is where they dont have snow and thats the West coast. They dont usually get a lot of snow, I dont understand why they bid for the Winter Olympics to begin with. Sorry you couldnt have some hot dogs or marshmallows.....Well just try to enjoy it for what it is......a nice white gift!!

I haven't been snowed in for many years, but when I have been, I like to make things that both warm the house and me. I make a really good veggie soup, a bit labor intensive at the beginning, but makes a lot in the end. The former roomie and I made potato soup too. Once we roasted a whole chicken, made the kitchen nice and warm and fed us nicely in the end. mostly I just hide out from the cold weather, on the computer or in bed...

Believe me. You're not missing anything if you haven't been snowed in lately or maybe just the wonder warm smells of food baking or simmering on the stove. The cream of vegetable soup is labor intensive, but it's soooo good when it's done.

I've never been much of a fan of cream soups, so I probably wouldn't care for it

Living down in the south east, we do not have to worry about the snow. But on cold rainy weekends, I want chili, or homemade hot soups. Something that just makes you feel warm all over, and is easy to eat curled up on the couch under a blanket.

There's nothing like a good warm bowl of hot food to cuddle under a blanket with. Bowls are easy to hold and keeps your hands warm too!

On days like that I like to cook chili for the family. It keeps us nice and warm and just seems like a good snow day food...

I like good hearty chili to. So is beef stew. With Maryland getting hit with a second blizzard I had just enough food to get by for that one. I'm going to be going to the store this weekend. We have another 3-4 inches due in Monday. I'm stocking up again and the chili sounds good and the stew.

Woa,When we met the big snowstorm two years ago,I remember that everything just got stopped. You know, the traffic, the supply of the food, etc, all got stucked. So we have no choice but eat some fast food like the fast noodles...

Maryland had the same problem with these two blizzards. We are still digging out. Even the fast food places were closed. A few small restarants were open, but the ones that showed up there were single individuals or young couples that were out for the fun of it.

fortunately, the place that i am living does not have any snow... the coldest temperature we ever get here during winter is 0 degrees celcius and it is very rare... we get hail (tiny piece of ice block) every now and then but not snow... but during winter, my favourite meal will be hot soup as it will keep my body warm... take care and have a nice day...

We make whatever we have on hand. We went shopping on Thursday evening and picked up a few things to get us through the weekend so we'd have enough food to make it until we could actually get out again. I don't think we've ever made anything special when we've been snowed in. We just grab food from the fridge, the freezer or the pantry and throw it all together.

My grandmother always kept a well stocked pantry and fridge in the winter, so we had the choice of just about anything to whip up, but it was the special, traditional dishes that we made sure we had the ingredients for. I bet when you went to the store you got toilet paper. Can;t be caught without that. I've got enough to last until spring....lol

I keep a stock of those "TV dinner" packs, the ones one can just put in the microwave for three minutes, and that's it. Very easy and very convenient. There are a a variety of packs, turkey, beef, pork, etc. Not expensive either. I am not a good cook any way. So, I don't keep those groceries.

I use to get the TV dinners, but you don't really get much and it's more expensive to by the frozen, prepared foods. Making a dish from scratch gives you left overs that you can freeze for later.

I am fond of water-based food which are more soupy because they would make me feel warm. With a pinch of spicy kick to them as well, so I can break into a sweat. :) My mother always makes this Vietnamese rice noodle soup called Pho which is tedious but once done, oh so good to eat. You start by boiling the beef or chicken broth which can take 2-5 hours and for the soup base it would include a little cinnamin, onions, herbs. You would then drain the noodle into steaming hot water for about 2-3 minutes then take it out into a bowl. Put on some beef, chicken, tripe and meatballs if your have any. Sprinkle it with scallions and pour in the broth. For taste you add Hoisin sauce and sritcha hot sauce. After one bowl, I'm ready for the news again. :)

Soup is good food. The soup that your mother makes really does sound good, but what is sritcha hot sauce?

If I weren't snowbound, I'd ask if I could come over to your house to help you eat those yummy-sounding foods! I like to make slow-cooked stews and soups. They warm the house up and make it smell really yummy in the process. This last snow, though, has me eating things that I can just heat up in the microwave because we have so much snow to shovel in order to be able to get out of here that I have no energy left to do any creating in the kitchen. I may do some creating later today, though. My husband said the wrong thing to me as I was outside shoveling around the car so he can get to work tomorrow so I stopped and came inside. He's on his own out there unless he apologizes and he never apologizes. So, once I recouperate some of my strength, I'll mosey on into the kitchen and see what I can cook up.

My grandmother was the one that kind of got me into cooking and baking when we were snowed in. The one thing that I really miss is the fireplace. Nothing like eating the brownies in front of the fireplace with our St.Bernard....lol You're more than welcome to stop by and join me. I made a fresh batch of the cream of vegetable soup today.

Well although the snow is rarely bad enough here in the UK to be classed as snowed in, or at least where I live, I still always end up cooking big hearty casseroles when the weather turns cold enough/ snowy to keep me inside. I also make sure I have enough bacon as I love to start a snowy day with a bacon sandwich, lol.

Even though I love my coffee in the morning I will opt for a cup of hot chocolate when there's been a snow storm. Now you've got me thinking of the bacon I don't have....lol

Being snowed in is the perfect time to clean out the refrigerator and cupboards. Pull out the biggest pot and make mystery soup. Put the basics in (onions, garlic and celery) and add any and all ingredients needing to be used up in the frige and cupboards. No 2 pots are ever the same, but it is always delicious.

Mystery soup is what my mom use to make, but I like making things just the way a recipe says. Sometimes she would thicken it sometimes, but then we would call it muddlly glups....lol
