Today I needed a taxi, that my car is snowy, and I walk 3 km, and he took my money for 6 km, and of course he keep the change too, few cents, but they were my cents, and if I wanted i let me him this money no he take me this money;Why do taxi drivers think about us we are stupid? just because we need them? who controls them? they are the law in traffic?All time, before i say "keep the change"...they already do this; I want let this money i hate when they keep the change before i let it.

after all the taxy driver is living upon you. so, he expects a tip from you so he keeps it to himself. if a person served you well then he would expect some tip from you. now it totally depends upon you whether you are going to give him or not. if you ask for the change then it will be shame for you. but if you want that money back then ask him to give back money. i think they will pay you.

It is beyond my comprehension to understand as to why should you encourage taxi drivers keeping the extra change without being allowed to do so. At the outset what is the purpose of the charge that we are supposed to pay as per the meter, meant for. Is it not for the service they have rendered.Yes, It is very much for the service that they render and it is official. Please understand that everyday when you leave your office does your employer pay you a few dollars extra besides your weekly paycheck unofficially.After all you are also giving him and the company a lot of un-solicited services. No he won't pay you anything extra, not at all. When you go shopping does any shopkeeper allow you to take the goods even if you are short of one dollar as against the price marked for the Item. again a big No. If you want to see a movie and by chance you are short of just one dollar will they allow you to enter the theatre. No, not at all. Now once,some funny guy who had lots of money and did not know how to spend and where to spend went on distributing extra pennies besides official fees/charges to the/any person who rendered him any service. This gave some kind of exciting pleasure or saddistic pleasure. It was very personal but the onlookers thought that it was a nice gesture and some felt that it amplifies your status in the society. So this is how the system of giving tips began.However the person who began this practice also did not know the term TIP that was later given to the practice he initiated. On the other hand let us have a pragmatic look at the practice, don't you think we are ourselves responsible to encourage lazy guys to earn extra bucks other than what they really deserve. This practice develops a phenomena that they only serve those who tip them . Ask yourself whether it is justified from the angle of the whole society .

The taxi drivers here in the states are paid minimum wage and their income is based primarily on how much passengers they have a day as well as tips. A little while back taxi drivers went on a strike and have gained quite a reputation for driving horribly. But your money is your money, no driver should assume that you gave him that tip unless he gave you the change back and you insist. That's horrible to hear. I'm sorry to hear that. Just make sure you're ready to have your change in the next ride or better yet, if you can take the bus that would be better than dealing with such trifles.

They feel that they are entitled to a "tip." I often give drivers a little extra money, but only when I feel like doing that. If someone does this to me, say the bill comes to $4.95, and I give him $5, I'll say "I thought the bill only came to $4.95 You must have miscalculated." Do that, and he should feel so awkward, he'll give you the money back. To which I will add "I do tip on occasion, but only honest drivers!"

icesmile, I just have enough experience with the taxis in Bucharest, that I can just understand what you are going through. Basically, if you do not feel like being generous for that day, you should always have the exact change before you board the taxi. This will prevent any misunderstanding and inconveniences when you arrive at your destination. I think you need to know that a lot of taxi drivers I had experienced in Bucharest would just cheekily take for granted that your change are their tips and after a few rides, I just have small change in my pockets to pay the exact meter fare. If I may add here, especially members who are planning to visit Bucharest - to be VERY CAREFUL when taking a taxi at the front door of the Gara de Nord (Nord Railway Station). In fact, you MUST NEVER board at the front door of this station where there are many "crook" taxi drivers whose cabs do not belong to any taxi companies. They are bandits or pirates as you may want to label. As for your case, you can always note down the taxi license number or any particulars of your errant driver to make a complaint to the taxi company and to claim back the change he kept. I rarely have any complaints unless the driver had been obnoxiously rude or foul mouth, it is also probably because I am being a nice guy most of the time. Take care and have a nice day.

icesmile. If I can add, I feel your frustration here has something to do with your attitude that people take you for being stupid. But, why can't you see the point that they are taking the situation for granted? As I have said before, if you are not comfortable with their attitude, then prepare small change so that you can pay the exact fare. Also, it will really help to take things from a different perspective and on another level. Some learning curve here. Take care.

Hi sky, you know why i am so angry? because all the time i let tips, everywhere i ll go i let tips, in restaurant, to taxi driver, in supermarket, to beauty saloon, everywhere; WHERE OR IF I APRECIATE HOW THEY MAKE THEIRS JOB; BUT I LIKE WHEN I GIVE THE TIPS, NOT WHEN SOMEBODY JUST KEEP THE CHANGE; THIS MAKE ME ANGRY, WHEN THEY THINK THAT I AM STUPID;

Actually taxi-drivers in my coutnry (ofc not all of them) think you owe them much more than they fee you. And trust me they fee you quite a lot in comparsion with how much a bus will cost.A bus ticket here costs 0,25 cents for a student and you are able to get abroad on 4 busses inside a 70min limit with the same ticket. So you can pretty much go to one side of the city to the other with a max of 0,50 cents. A taxi driver would want about 25 - 30 Euros to do that!!!!! I too give tips to taxi drivers, but only to the ones that are pleasant and not rude, or to the ones that I changed the route whilst driving.

yes all they want is a tip,and your right they think that we need them so much,why they say you can't go home if the taxi are gone,and you go home safety and gave them a tip for a little happiness.

yeah, some of them can be pretty bad. I try to plan ahead well before the ride is done, it depends how they drive and act towards me as to what kind of tip I will give. I always give a tip. I will hand them say a $20.00 bill for a $17.00 ride and say keep it. If it is more like a $12.00 fare and I hand up a $20.00, I will say "just give me back $5.00... don't let go of the money or decide the tip until the end of the ride. Plus, if you remember their name and cab number, you can call the cab company and complain. Good day to ya.... Tidwell
