Sand Cranes

Does anyone know anything about Sand Cranes? They migrate here every year in the winter months. There are hundreds of them. They fly to an empty corn field near my house every morning, then return to the lake every afternoon. Why do they migrate here? Afterall its not very warm here in the winter. This winter has been colder than most. They fly in Vs like geese. Why would they migrate here when there are surely more warmer places farther south where they would be more comfortable?
