Paperbackswap.com is a free book trading service. You will need to post some books to earn credits to get some books in return. You are responsible, and the other members for shipping via media mail. I use it all the time, and I love it.

Your local library is a great place to start out. Get a card for a low-cost (maybe even free) and you can take out several at a time, return them and get more. That should feed your literary appetite. Many organizations hold book drives in Banks. For a donation of your choice you can take a couple books. The thrift store is another great place; lots and lots of cheap books, and they get new ones in all the time so you can go back often to get more and even re-donate the ones you've read.

the only place i know of for free books is the library (but sadly, you have to return them) but thrift stores can offer you a good number of books for very little cost.
