Texting while driving - Safe or unsafe?

I recently watched a documentry on cell phone use. It's said that people use their cell phone 6-12 hours a day! They said that out of those hours 20% of the time is spent while driving. I know that I do the occasional text or phone call while behind the wheel, but nothing to drastic. It was stated that there are hundreds of crashes daily due to phone use while driving. I actually know this problem is not uncommon. While driving to work yesterday, I paid more attention to people driving around me. I swear people are very distracted when driving. When I paid more attention, I noticed that people do more than text and rant on the phone; they actually put on make up while driving, play games, and even dance! It's no wonder why there are so many wrecks. So, what about you? Do you talk on the phone while driving? How often? Do you have any other bad habits while driving? Feel free to tell some stories. :)

no, i tend to stay focused driving rather than picking up my phone while driving. i usually turn on the phone silent mode, so it won't ring if someone ever call me at that time. i will call him/her back later when i arrived at my destination. other bad habits while driving? hm, i think i have no bad habit while driving. i usually drive very carefully, tends to be a bit slow and give other vehicles more chances to pass first.

I do talk on my cell phone while driving, but recently my husband gifted me with a handsfree device and I love it!!! I am able to keep both hands on the wheel and still have a conversation. Even then my conversations are generally not that long. I will sheepishly admit that there are times I do text behind the wheel, even though it's a bad idea. Most of the time I wait to text while I am sitting at a stoplight. I do think it's funny how these days everyone makes such a big deal about talking on the phone while driving when I have seen the very same things you have seen...people putting on make up, digging around in the backseat, or even reading!!!

I have before, but I don't anymore, and if I do, I use a bluetooth as here in Oregon, we can't talk and drive unless we sue bluetooth. I am all for that, as it is just to dangerous to talk and frive, as poeple get distracted, and cause accidents. I never did tak and drive to much anyway, so have never had the problr though being distracted. So, before I leave home, I get my bluetooh ready so should I get a call, I won't get stopped and ticketed. I have never ever texted while driving though. I would have to have my head examined to do so. It is just to dangerous, and that can cause accidents, so I will never ever do it. Take care, and happy mylotting.
