Facebook does not plan to charge!

There are a lot of alarmist messages spreading around Facebook and the internet that suggest that Facebook is going to start charging members to use the site. Many of the users who have been taken in by this have joined a Facebook group named something along the lines of "We will not pay to use Facebook, if this happens we are gone!" and the group membership numbers are absolutely huge. Facebook has no plans to charge and these rumours have been doing the rounds for months on end. The popular debunking website, Snopes.com, quotes Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's chied operating officer and her claims to the Business Week magazine: "The answer is no, we are not planning on charging a basic fee for our basic services. Once again, that question stems from people thinking we're growing so quickly we're running out of money. We're growing really quickly but we can finance that growth. We're not going to charge for our basic services." UK newspaper, The Guardian, ran an article only recently discussing how the company is edging ever closer to becoming profitable. The worst thing Facebook could do right now is drive away a section of the membership which is its greatest asset. Bear this in mind when the next scaremonger tells you to set up a backup account somewhere else ready for the big migration when Facebook brings in membership fees - it's just not going to happen!

I guess you don't have that many people on your friends list then. I expect you'll get one eventually - be ready to tell them it's rubbish!

To be honest with you if you look at alot of social sites like face book as well as bebo there are always these groups saying about charging the people that are on there. There are also alot of people that used to be on there all the time and then they now rarely go on there and there are also alot of people like myself that have only been on there 7 times this year where as i would not really be worried if i was made to pay or delete as i would i must say delete my account. The thing is there will always be people out there that will believe everything people are saying no matter how far fetched it is.

You're right of course. The sad thing is that people don't do anything to verify the rumour before spreading it. By then it's too late to tell them it's not true because they won't bother to pass on the message to everyone they already "infected" with the lie. The Snopes website is a great resource to check for things you're not sure of that sound vaguely far-fetched.

I have always been of the opinion that until something actually happens, its not going to. Quite often people make more out of things then they should. This, isn't a very good thing. I have yet to see anything, except for two discussions here about facebook and charging for services. So I never once thought its true.
