I don't have a problem with teenagers having mobile phones.. I've had my first mobile phone when I was 12 years old.. There was no text feature that time so basically it was utilized for calling purposes only.. You know, mobile phone is a necessity these days.. in case of emergency, your kids can call emergency hotline right away... :) or if they need to attend a school meeting or do a group project they can contact you without any trouble..

Well i think there is no harm in giving mobile phones to teenagers but they should be closely monitored when they are using it. The good and the bad things of the usage should be explained to them by their elders and i think that they would surely understand. You can't stop them from using it because the more you try to stop them, more the curiosity would increase. So its better not to stop them from using it and just deal with them in more friendly way.

Well, it is pretty essential for your kid to have a mobile phone for communication purposes. It only becomes inappropriate when the teen is not monitored. Who knows? Your son/daughter could already be secretly dating over the phone. It is important to explain to them their limitations in mobile usage. And I wouldn't recommend "smart phones" such as iPod or Blackberry to them as it could be so distracting.
