Thanks for the help. The previous owner of the PC gave me a duplicate copy of his pirated OS. I used to do system repair by inserting the pirated OS CD, and running Windows Recovery Console DOS commands. But recently, inserting the pirated OS CD doesn't work anymore. In my opinion, since it is only a duplicate copy, with the low quality of blank CD used in reproducing the OS CD, I think the OS CD is damaged already and cannot be used anymore (due to constant borrowing of the CD by my friends and neighbors). The only way I think is to get back to the person I bought the computer and ask again for a copy of Windows (again, a pirated Windows CD), or buy a new Windows CD (preferably a genuine OS CD), and re-install. Is it possible to re-install genuine OS without erasing the files in my hard disk? Is there an option like that? Like repairing the pirated Windows with a genuine Windows?

Did you install anything recently? Check even if you have plugged USB devices like printers, digital cameras, etc. Try removing them and restarting.

The only device I remember plugging to my computer is a memory card reader and a memory in it (a micro-SD actually). But I always scan devices like that with USB Disk Security on-demand antivirus and after that, with Symantec Endpoint Protection antivirus. Can that tiny device (the memory card and the card reader) alter the ecosystem in my drivers' world?

Did you receive a stop error message (bunch of numbers) in addition to the DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL? Can you boot up at all? It could be bad driver or damaged RAM or virtual memory (you mentioned downloading an eBook file). How much RAM is on your computer? Unfortunately for you since you said you are running a pirated copy of XP, you may need the installation CD to do a repair.

Thanks for your response. I appreciate all your kindness here, and for your heart on helping others. Actually, after the incident, I just waited til the clock (the countdown from 1 to 100) finished. Then the BSOD disappreard and the computer restarted successfully. Then there was a notification "The system has just recovered from a serious problem". When I saw that, I sigh with relief. I said to myself, the problem is over. But it doesn't stop me from finding out what happen and what went wrong... I experienced BSOD several times already, and I knew one BSOD differs from another BSOD (with regard to software or hardware involved). Last week, I experienced another BSOD involving my video card. nv4_disp. I learned it was caused by video card being overheated. So what I did is I removed the casing, and started using the computer bare. This time, another BSOD. But I am wondering what went wrong? I know, it cannot be because of device overheating. It happened just after booting. So I am wondering what caused this?

Thanks for your response. I know that's the best thing to do but I am always hesitant to go to the website of Microsoft, knowing that the previous owner of my computer installed a pirated copy of Windows XP in this computer. I am afraid Microsoft will detect my OS and will install a persistent pop-up notification telling I am a victim of counterfeit Microsoft software. So instead of going to them when I have problems, I usually seek outside help...

insert a window disc and start the setup and then repair your windows... after that back up data some where in external hardisk... which should b completely scanned with a latest updated antivirus.... then completely format ur disk or make partitions from start... after installing windows first thing u have to do is download an antivirus and update it... then u can copy ur data after scanning it...

Thanks. I used to do that before. System repair. But I noticed my pirated copy of OS installer no longer work properly, probably damaged already due to constant borrowing of friends and neighbors. I considering saving money for genuine Windows installer. How much a genuine Windows Installer would cost today?
