Fatness = Richness (Happiness)

People in my place consider you as rich and happy if you are fat. The comment "oh, you put on a few kilos" will make a person happy because putting on weight is correlated to happiness. If you are lean, your family will force you to eat to increase weight because others will think that you are from a poor family. Once, I was affected by this belief. I went down by a few pounds soon after marriage because of travelling and kind of adjusting to my husband's food style. So, my parents thought that I was not happy after the marriage, only because I reduced weight. So, I forced myself to eat well and increased weight before I met my parents the next time. What does obesity or fatness mean in your society?

usually, that is how they look at healthier, chubby persons, they are rich. if someone is slim, thinner, they would think they are poor or less fortunate. i have tried a lot of ways to keep me look, at least look healthier, but nothing happens. maybe, it's the genes. my dad is medium built and so as my brothers. my sisters are also not fat though not so thin.

It is good to look medium rather than looking fat. I think heridity also kind of matters. One of my friends who was lean all throughout her life, put on weight soon after her delivery. So, you can never believe that it won't happen. I have heard that 'Lion dates syrup' is good to increase weight and it has immediate action. Try it if you are in India. I don't know if it is available in other countries.

I think there are restrictions regarding sending food items interntionally. We are not allowed to carry food items like pickles to other countries. Lion's is the brand name. You can ask for 'dates syrups' in the super markets in your locality. It is nothing but squeezed dates with honey. I am sure that you can find it. Good luck.

It is great to know that you were able to reduce the weight. It is not easy to reduce weight once you are fat. I have been trying for the last 6 months to reduce weight. I think I lost 1-2 kilos, but not more than that. I didn't go to a gym. But, I started walking more and controlled food. I think I have to reduce consumption of tea, coffee, and sweet things.

Hi dalia, I can understand the thinking of that people, even some may ask, will you start save the money and left eating (lol). We can’t change the perceptions of that people. But your parents doubt is different dear, they were concerned about your happiness especially when you are newly wedded and they knew that tensions also reduce weight. That may be the reason for their worry.

The truth is I was very happy after marraige, but I reduced weight due to other reasons. We went for a trip and had food from out. I didn't like the north Indian food and got stomach upset also. My husband likes to have light food like toast for breakfast and apple for dinner. So, I was lazy to cook only for me and it affected my weight also. Thanks for the response.

For us, we don't necessarily equate fatness to happiness, mostly we are concerned about how it affects the health. It can always go both ways, you can be fat because you live a life of abundance, with plenty to eat, or fat because you live an unhealthy lifestyle or indulge in emotional eating. Also these days, people like being thin, me included, and I diet and work out to stay in shape. I guess what gets people concerned though is when one suddenly gets too fat, or loses a lot of weight suddenly. I remember when I lost a lot of weight, my mom got so alarmed. The same way, when my brother got really fat while away at university, my mom got him into working out and dieting when he came home. As for obesity, for us, it is a point of concern. Obesity is can negatively affect your weight, not to mention self-esteem, so for us, balance is key, not too fat and not too thin.

I don't think this is right at all. People shouldn't aim to be fat because being fat is being unhealthy. It creates lots of problems. And I'm really sorry to say this, but it's foolish to think that just because you're not fat you're not happy. Even if you eat a lot you could still be slim if you are very active.

So you're from India, I see. Well, that kind of thought was popular in Europe 500 years ago, but things have changed a lot, and now obesity is seen as what it really is, I mean, a bad state of health that doesn't benefit the person. Obesity was seen in the past as a sign of being wealthy as most of the population were poor and the obese ones were the ones who could pay it, but nowadays it's more a sign of not taking care of your body.

where i am, stuff equals richness and fatness just equals being lazy. also, fatness really equals being poor because you are eating all those carbs because carbs are cheaper than eating healthy.

This is a very interesting discussion. In my society, everything is very literal. Well, in most situations though. The slim will be treated good, and the obese will only be treated good if he or she is rich. But not all people are like; these are general things that I've seen.

Where I live, it means you are a lazy, unproductive, careless, sloth. It means you have no respect for yourself, or others. It means you eat too much junk food, and don't get enough exercise. It is really frowned upon, even when there is a legitimate physical reason. Some "disease" or something... There is a lot of money to be made in Canada, to help people get thing. As a sign of status, we drive expensive cars and live in big houses, and wear very nice clothes. But, I take this believe. "What other people think of me is none of my business, the only thing that is my business is what I think of myself" I would neither, lose nor gain weight because someone else wanted me to. Cheers, I appreciate you.

So I guess I'm very very happy and wealthy! Where do you live? I live in the south of Mexico among many ethnic groups where there is no fat people. I'm fat, so they try tu humiliate me and do things to critizice me. In my culture it is a little bit diferent because people don't mention anything for respect if you are fat, but here is quite the opposite. Tey try to always mention that fact. I really want to loose weight because it doesn't makes me feel good about myself. Or the other solution is to live where you live so I can feel rich and happy. LOL, Libna.

Oh in my place being fat is just being fat, no meaning. Happiness? nah, I dont think so, most people tend to gain weight when they are depressed or when sad, because some people gets relief from comfort food, so they gain weight but NOT happy. I think it's just beliefs in different countries coz i never heard of being fat as being happy. I won't ever get really happy if i'm fat/obese, lol. I want to be healthy and I don't care about what people say about me, I don't. It's not them working for me and feed me. And who cares if I'm poor or not, it's non of their business. If I'm happy, I am happy.

You dont have to be fat. Just gain enough weight so you wont look skinny. It is true that when you lose weight you dont get to eat that much but what if you're only busy and you feel happier to have accomplish a job or you lose weight because you're dieting and getting slimmer makes you happy. I have seen people who are fat and not happy as well. You dont have to be fat or obese to be happy, just live your life to the fullest. Not everything that other people say actually matters.

For me fat woman is happier, then a skinny one. She knows that she is fat and the only think she can do is to be good :)

well i can get a hint of that, even in my place some think that way, but i have to wonder what makes them perceive things this way, it's not that fat people are happy it can also be that fat people are lazy..
