Hello everyone well I like to take photo's of just about everything and everyone. I was thinking about this the other day and I was wondering, is it possible to get found without going to school for photography? I mean I know that you can start with taking photo's of your family and friends but what else is there after that? Where I live at it is such a small town so there are not many places that could use a photographer. Also I don't have a license to drive to get fond by getting a job threw the newspaper. I'm not really looking into making a living off my pictures just yet, just enough to have a little extra cash till my boys are older and then by that my hubby could work lighter or just not have to work at all. So any advice or helpful info would be great. Happy Mylotting

I don't believe in 'getting found out'. I believe in hard work and self marketing. No one is being magically found out just by sitting at home and taking pictures. If you want a job as a photographer, you need to put yourself into a 'getting a job' mode, which mean- meeting potential employers, mailing potential employers, even asking friends to recommend you to others. I suggest you try doing some of these ideas, or make some on your own. Good luck! =]

Wow you gave me some great ideas here that it even gave me some of my own ideas. You are right about not being able to get found by sitting at home. I have thought about taking pictures of nature and such stuff like this and then framing the pictures and sell them at flea markets. I hope that maybe this will be a great first step. Happy Mylotting

One more way is that you can upload your photos where you get paid for it and if your photos are really good then maybe you could get found out.

Hi Seppy, You do NOT need to go to school or take classes to get into photography. And don't think that because you live in a small town you can't get started in your own business. I live in a small town (under 400 people) and my wife and I have a photography studio. We started in our basement, shooting our children. Since we invested in equipment, we decided to try and make a little money as a side business. It grew enough in the last two years that I quit my full time job. Now, from reading through the answers you are providing in these posts, I have a couple comments I strongly urge you to consider. 1.) Get a driver's license. I don't know where you live, but if it really is a small town, you will need to be able to get around. If you have public transportation and taxi's, you are not in that small of a town! (by my standards anyway) You can't have much success unless you are able to get around. (that is my honest opinion. I live in a place where it is unheard of to not have a driver's license, though. So if you can get around without one, then I guess this isn't a big deal.) 2.) Invest in a high quality camera that you can afford. Someone mentioned a Canon 30d. Great camera. Do NOT think you are going to be able to sell yourself as a "pro" walking around with a point and shoot camera. 3.) Don't waste your money on school, unless you really need to take classes to learn the basics. My line of thinking is that if you need to take classes to become a photographer, then you shouldn't become a photographer. You will learn more by studying your camera manual and learning how to use YOUR camera than you would probably learn at school. 4.) Visit photographer's websites. Find shots you like and think are neat. Then go out and PRACTICE shooting those with your camera. If you can't figure out how they did something, then try to find out how they did it. There is so much information on the internet about photography it will blow your mind! 5.) Join some forums where actual photographers hand out. Photographers are kind of funny about what they are willing to share, and who they share it with. I don't know why, they just are! But if a photog sees you are trying to learn, and you are polite to them and ask the right questions, they will usually be very helpful. If you truly have high quality images, I agree with what a lot of people are telling you - try to sell them as stock images. But don't be surprised if you never sell any of them, because there are millions of people who try to sell pics this way. And, a lot of them are going to be better than what you have to offer. I suggest you research equipment while you are waiting for enough money to buy yourself a quality camera. That way you will know what you want when you have the funds available. Ebay is a great place to buy your first camera IF you know what you are looking for and are careful about choosing the right seller. On the other hand, if you go to a store that specializes in cameras and equipment, then you usually will have a staff of people willing to help you if you need it. But you will learn a TON just by shopping for the right camera. That is how I got into it, honestly. Allow yourself to follow links that lead to more information and you will be amazed at what you can learn. By the way, the more you learn about the cameras, the more you will change your mind about which camera you will want. Or at least that is what happened in my case! But the point is that you will be learning! And that is truly the key to making yourself a valuable photographer. You will constantly be learning new techniques, new tips, and new points of view. Other wise you won't succeed. And you will need to constantly be learning more about what is available to you. Other wise you won't last. Sorry for the long answer, but I get kind of passionate about the topic! Good luck to you!

Hello, well know that I have read your response I would like to apologize about how rude I was earlier when I saw your one comment.Wow I have to say that you and your wife are inspiration to me. Well I am going to reply to each comment in numerical way so that it will be easier. 1. Well we don't have any taxis. In fact everyone here gets around by walking. Well just about everyone that is not lazy...LOL But I do know that I want my license though so that I could at some point travel outside of my town. 2. Well I know that there was this one camera I wanted that will cost about 600 dollars. I am not sure of the name but it has different types of lens for it and has many different types of dials for different event settings. 3. I never thought about it that way. I always thought that you needed schooling to learn more to photographing. That there you have a great point. Now that you have said that, it makes sense. 4. I like this idea, I will for sure do that because I have seen many pictures that I thought was really cool looking and neat. That there would be great practice for me. Then I could eventually go out and do my own pictures. 5. I think this here is a really great idea. Do you think I could get more helpful advice from you if I add you? You seem to know what you are talking about. Well I know that I saw some nice equipment that I liked and think it will be a big plus for me when it comes to lighting and coloring of the pictures. I never thought about looking on ebay but then again I am very leary about buying from there because of a few bad experience on there. But I will for sure look on there though to get some ideas. Well I do know that there is a best buy and office max that has tons of selections in cameras. So that there alone will be helpful for me. Wow so in all reality it will take me time to figure out which camera I really want. I never thought of it like that. I always saw the same camera that I really liked and it seemed to be perfect which is the one that cost almost 600 dollars. I will have to take my time then to read all the features on the camera along with others so that I know that I am getting a really good one. Well as for your answer being long, you do not need to be sorry because it has really helped me out by seeing through your eyes of what it is like to be a photographer. Not only that but I honestly do think that I had learned a lot already through your response. So in my eyes I have already learned the main first points of photographing and that alone is just awesome. You have been a big help and that alone I will never forget or take for granted. i think there is still a possibility even though it is quite slim... as long as you really produce a good work and other people acknowledge your work, you can be recognised through word of mouth... so try to establish yourself by taking pictures for your friends or send your work to enter a competition whenever you have a chance... it will take lots of hard work though... but i'm sure you will be able to make it if you have the will and determination... good luck... take care and have a nice day...

Hello, I have to say that your kind words are the best yet to come in all reality. I figure that I am going to ask my friend if I could take the photos or be part of the group of people who takes photos of her wedding when she gets married. So that either way I could get more practice at this and the she could be my one customer that gets free photos so that I can see what she says about my work and then shortly after I want to do the competition idea that you mentioned. Thanks for the luck because I will need all the luck that I can get. Happy Mylotting

I think you have the approach backwards. There is not much of a market for pictures that are taken, then sent off because you like them. There is a huge market for photos taken that meet people's needs: in other words, you don't need a degree, or a drivers' license. You do need a decent camera and you need to know what people are buying. Then you need to take those particular photos in the style that sells. Landscape, travel, pets, all sell, but for stock, PEOPLE pictures are the best sellers by far. There are many people making very good livings just uploading pictures to stock and microstock libraries: there are a lot more wasting their time doing the same thing because they haven't made sure their photos meet the guidelines. Here is a site that might help you get started: http://www.thephotographerslife.com/

Hello, goodness you are such an angel. The link will be such a great help to the collection of ideas and helpful info that I have received so far. I will say that I too find a lot of pictures that are landscapes and travel and pets out there in markets. I love buying those type of pictures. I think they look great in any kind of room. I am so thankful for the info that you have given me also for the link. Happy Mylotting

If you go to school you have a better chance, but you don't have to. It is real difficult if you can't get around to get a job, but you can always contact your newspaper and submit some of your photos. Don't expect to get paid right away, but if they like them then they could possibly use you to do projects on the side for pay of course. Just don't set your expectations too high though.

Hello, Well I know that I am not going to hold my breath that is for sure. But I do know a few newspaper places in our town itself. I know that I want to do schooling for it because then maybe it would be easier. I did find a really great schooling that can be done at home, which would be best for me due to the fact that my hubby and I have two young boys and my hubby works 3rd shift so then it would be easier me to do it because I can do my homework at night when the boys are sleeping and then I can do my housewife duties during the day and then still have time to spend with my boys and hubby. But you did give some really good advice along with what to expect. Happy Mylotting

I have taken 2 years of classes in high school, but I am not "found" yet. I go to the library and take out as many books as I can on photography, and watch lots of youtube videos. I saved up some cash and splurged on a Canon 30d dslr camera with 2 lens. What is with all the information? Because after all of that, even though I am not found I have gotten myself a decent education and knowledge of photography that helps me out. I live in a small town, but my friends know of my experience and are constantly asking me to shoot things for them. I am 18 years old and so far I have done 4 paid shoots, doing a pregnancy, wedding, child and a shoot for my friend in the next year. Photography has a great saying, "To make a small amount of money you have to spend a lot first" Which in a way is true. I spent $500 on my camera, but I already paid it back with 2 shoots. Just ask around, bug your friends, make a portfolio to show off. Then start charging. Make sure you can prove your worth before you charge.

Hello, Wow it sounds like that you are doing pretty good so far. I wish I had a lot of friends but I don't. I am lucky that I have the 5 friends that I do have. It makes sense though to shoot photos of your friends or of other requests to get up there a little on the ladder. I like the portfolio idea, I will for sure do that. It even in fact sounds like a lot of fun. I know that my hubby said that when we get the money for my camera we can go and get it. I am not for sure what the name of it is but it costs about 600 dollars. He did ask me why I wanted a pricey camera and I told him because I want to slowly try to be able to do this for a living. I do know that my sister when she does go back to school said that I could do her graduating photos. I think till I can get to where I need to be that I will start small with the photos of my family and friends when we go to the lake and then try to do the portfolio. I know that I want to be able to travel some so that I can take photos of the mountains and lakes and other nature like that. You have been a big help and inspiration. Happy Mylotting

hi! Yes, I think you can be found by someone if you like photography and it is in your blood even without going to photography school, but you must be really big talent and the chance is really very very small! I also like photograhpy but have no money to go to university to study it :(

Hello, you have a point with the chance being small. I too wanted to go to some kind of schooling for it but not the one that you speak of because I would get home sick and with having 2 little boys and a hubby I do not think I could do it. Although I have found a schooling that is for in your home and it is a 12 course class so I am guessing it is probably for about a year. I thought about doing that because it costs about only 1,700 dollars I do believe. But if I do it, it will be when I can use a tax return so that I can do my one picture in the winter time. Because the last course for it is sending in your picture to the school for it to be graded and then from their you get your diploma/certificate. Well I hope that maybe one of these days you can get to where you can go to school for photography. Happy Mylotting

i don't know about making big money out of amateur photography but its possible to earn extra from them by submitting them to some legit sites and earn royalty fee from them after a year or so for each photo you submit. however i don't know if you can make a lot from it sooner because it takes time. sites available that pay you for photos buy your photos in bulk. means you have to submit a lot of photos to make few dollars from it. its quite hard so i gave up on that. but best luck to you maybe you'll succeed.

Hello, do you still have some of these online sites? Because I am willing to try anything. Plus I am so ready to work super hard. I am not really into wanting to make a lot of money of it just yet. I want to start out small for a about a good 10 years or more and then move into it big. I figure this way it will give me a while to become a pro at it. So I am gussing that it is really hard to sell photos then. I hope that I succeed. If not at least I can say that I tried. Happy Mylotting
