When you are thinking do you use images or do you use speech and if so is it in your mother tongue or any other language you are equally good in?

This can actually show a lot about who a person is and what frame of mind they are. I usually think in english but on some occasions or when I'm in Europe for a week or so I start thinking in french. I usually think in my own voice accompanied by some vague images that are often slightly morphed from how they should be. On occasion I think with other voices which is kind of weird. Typing this I'm sort of dreaming slightly (probably cause I'm falling asleep, it's late) and thinking with my own voice.

yes. you are absolutely right. Also it was the same with me. when I was staying in Germany as a student then I would think and at times the words associated ( tho silently) would be either in my mother tongue or English or even German. This may be happening to most who may be every conversant & fluent in more than one language. Regards

Its so interesting, I have asked everyone I have ever met that was truly bilingual which language they think in. In almost every answer was that it depended on what or who they were thinking about and which language that particular subject was more closely tide to in their mind.

I haven't actually paid attention to that, but I think I use both. When it comes to a language, I think I use my mother tongue at most. When dreaming about something, I usually imagine it in pictures, I think it's normal to use pictures then. But yea, process of thinking is a really complicated thing.

Is there any authoritative and credible publication to the effect that we normally think (and dream) in our mother tongues?
