am a filipino so i've grown up with the usual spoon and fork tandem on the table. as i grew up, actually only a couple of days ago, i realized that almost all other nationalities eat everything, even rice and the likes of it, with fork. why? even i have a hard time thinking how chopstick users taking in rice feel full with this type of eating utensils. there's hardly anything scooped up with fork or chopsticks. no offense. peace

In the UK we tend to use a Knife and fork for main courses and savoury dishes. I always use a fork to eat rice, although on a trip to Hong Kong and Mainland China i have the chop stick thing down to an art! We use spoons quite a bit for cereals, desserts and all kinds. I am just an everyday and I don't know the exact etiquette for utensil use in the UK, but i hope it provides you with a basic idea. So in the Phillipines the utensil set up is a spoon and fork? Do you use knifes also? Rice is quite easy to shovel on to a fork, give it a try one day.

knives and fork are oftentimes found in pizza stores here in the philippines. thanks for responding but it is more filling, since more rice is scooped, if one use spoon in eating rice especially if you put broth on the rice . guess, it's still down to one's culture .

Also it is easier to use a fork to eat rice when you are using a knife to help shovel it on. Like the italians, when eating spagetti we us a fork and spoon- I guess that is a similarity. What is Flipino cusine like? Is it similar to Thai or Chinese food?

Yep, that's true, I'm not sure why other nationalities are not used to using spoons other than the serving spoon. Hehehe. Just recently I had lunch at a Japanese Restaurant with my friends, and of course, I asked for a spoon and fork, because I can't really use the chopsticks, how hard I try. hehehehe.

Hahahahaha. I'm just like you. I still can't figure out how to use a chopstick, so I just stick with my spoon so I can enjoy my food.

actually its up to them if they feel comfortable of eating without the spoon specially in soap. for example in japan or other country who normally use chopstick they will rather slurp the soap than use chopstick since they cant take soap just by chopstick alone. sometimes its also based on their belief. people feel contented and full enough if they slurp than use spoon. it really depends to each so we cant just judge them. what matter is we both have the capacity to eat.

That is just how everyone of us was raised. In my country we use spoons for soup, dessert and breakfast cereal. Fork and knife for cooked meals, including rice. But when we braai, you just use your two old hands. TATA.
