Subaru is the way to go. Reliable, powerful yet frugal engines, and relatively safe. They're pretty barren in the luxuries department apart from the top level Legacy, but you can't have everything. But if you are thinking about cost, well, I'd say go for Toyota. Even though they're massively under crisis, overall their car are superb in term of cost.
