Does Anybody Else's Partner Do This?..

I bet you are wondering what's coming next aren't you my friends? Actually, I'm incapable of going on about rude stuff, I leave that to other experts on here. No, what I'm asking about is something far more mundane...does your partner fill the kettle up (needlessly) to the top when he or she is only brewing for 2 people? I would love to know if women do it as well as I've only known men to do it. Haha! A good example was my wonderful hubby making a brew for us both. He has coffee, I have tea. Now, our electric, cordless kettle has clear gauges with markers on (both sides, so there's no excuse) to show you where to fill the water up to, depending on how many you brew for. It even has the word "min" to show where the water goes for just one cup. That's why I bought it in the first place! It also whistles when it boils which is a great feature but anyway... How far did hubby fill the water up to? THE TOP! 1.5 litres! I asked him why he did this and he replied, "To make sure the element is covered up!" Haha! I found that really funny and still do. My Dad? The reason he does the same thing? So he doesn't have to keep filling the kettle up...and if he sees someone else "beating him to it" he will say, "that was MY water, leave it alone!" Haha! I really wish I had been dreaming all this but I'm afraid every word is true! Anyone else have problems with their partners overfilling their kettles? What are their lame excuses for doing so? I'd love to hear your views on this very important subject!

My hubby sometimes boils too much. When we used to go camping a lot, we bought a big flask and we would boil the camping kettle and then make tea and flask the rest of the water. It was nice to just go and make another cuppa without all the rigmarole of lighting the stove again. Anyway ,when we came home, we put the flask by the kettle in the house and have filled it from the kettle ever since. It can hold about 3 mugs of water so we boil enough for 5 which for some reason seems to be about where it gets filled to when hubby is on autopilot. Then we use 2 mugs at once and the rest is saved for next time. If he boils it and there is already a flask full,he will leave it in the kettle which I find a bit aggravating but he mostly remembers to check the flask first.

Well I've never heard of using a flask indoors before but it works for you and hubby so, "Go for it!" I say.

Thanks LOL it is handy for us as we tend to drink between 5 and 8 cups a day each. If there is boiled water in there when I am cooking I sometimes use it then instead and its always handy to have boiled water that has cooled for cleaning cuts and scratches .

LOL and then there is a half a pot of coffee being wasted! I know exactly what you mean! That happens all the time here. I even put the amount in the pot and could tell him just put it halfway since it is just for us but still alwys end up with more than we need!

Well we actually use two cups so it's the water that's wasted but I do know what you mean. Thanks for your response.

I fill up a big measuring cup and heat it up, then, when I need a second cup, it doesn't take as long to warm it again - mind you, I'm doing this in the microwave, and this will probably end when it finally warms up and I go back to iced tea!

its already hitting 80 in the afternoons, and iced tea is the order for then, but its still cold enough to want a hot drink in the morning.

Good for you my friend! Unfortunately, I don't think it will become warm enough for iced tea over here...but I can live in hope, then I can try some!

Reminds me of the time a friend and I were visiting her mother. She had put on a kettle to make some tea, and when it was about three-quarters boiled, the grumpy old man her mum lives with came into the kitchen, took the kettle off the stove, dumped the water, refilled the kettle and put it back on the stove!

Bwahahahaha :-). Welcome to the club, Janey :-D! Why men do what they do and why they refuse to learn when we try to educate them is just beyond me. I guess I will just have to resort to prayer, "God grant me the SERENITY to accept the things I cannot change, the COURAGE to change what I can and the WISDOM to know the difference." To save on gas, they say. Ours is not an electric kettle and we boil water on the stove. Well, same difference! What else can I do, but laugh :-D at their way of thinking. Or, do they really think? Have a beautiful day, despite.

Hello there! We do try and advise, guide and generally nag our hubbies but it never gets us anywhere does it? Hubby has a distinct problem with clutter, in particular white envelopes with (usually) unpaid bills in them in order of priority. They are everywhere it seems! We have a distinct lack of storage space and oh, how I wish we could buy a coffee table with at least 3 drawers! That would be great. I've also told him that when we upgrade the fire I don't want a fireplace anymore cos all he does is place his cr*p on the top. That, ALSO drives me nuts. At least we can go to the football in a few hours time, to let of steam!

Thank you! The last time I was there I fell and banged my knee on a seat in front, but that was only because a certain gentleman (not hubby) wouldn't move his own knees out of the way so I could get past. Hopefully, when I glare at him tomorrow as only a woman can, he might comply and get out of the s*dding way! Bed time now. Nighty night!

Have a great time at the football game, Janey. Leave your troubles behind and relax, shout, jump and laugh to your heart's content. You deserve it!

I sometimes do that without thinking, although for the most part, I usually half or quarter fill the kettle because I have a huge mug when I have coffee! It is odd that people do this though when there is not really any need.

That makes sense my friend! We have a huge mug from Sports Direct. It arrived free of charge when I submitted an order online last year. We've not used it as I'd probably get indigestion or something if I drank from it!

Hi Janey, My problem with hubby is he don't fill up the kettle at all, if there is water in it he just used it up till the kettle is completly empty, which it does annoy me. Tamara

Hi Janey, actually I haven't encountered such because I am the usual person who heats up water for the purpose of drinking tea. Although my hubby sometimes fill water to the top, but he uses that hot water to place in our tub or pail when we both take a bath. My hubby is a real practical person, he is the one reminding me about saving this and that. So if ever he would do boil water for the two of us, no need for me to tell him about how much he would fill the kettle, because I am sure he would fill it perfectly for the two of us. I have learn more on saving stuffs from toothpaste filling to saving electricity and more on my hubby. Although when I know things he don't know, I teach him too so we do both exchange knowledge. Happy Mylotting.

Hello, Janey. My husband is just the opposite. When I ask him to put the kettle on, he just swithes it on without checking the water level. Then I go to make our drinks, and there's not even enough water to make a drink for a fairy - assuming fairies drink tea or coffee, of course. When I ask him why he didn't put more water in the kettle, he says - this is really good - 'Well, I know you can't lift a full kettle with the arthritis in your wrists, so I didn't want to overdo it.' The fact that we have a special lightweight kettle because I can't lift a full ordinary kettle seems to have passed him by.

Hello! My hubby doesnt do that because we buy bottled water so we dont waste it. We could always leave it in the kettle but I like to put the kettle away after Im done with it. But, to be honest, he doesnt make coffee.....I do!! As for my dad, he fills it to half and yup, he says he'll have water already in for the next cup.....my mom used to do the same, so its not just a "man" thing lol.

I guess I'm like your hubby. There's only one of me, but I fill the pot to 12 cups for 12 cups of coffee. I don't drink it all in one sitting, but I don't mind reheating coffee. It just saves you the trouble of having to refill the pot.

Oh right so it's not the kettle that's full of water but the pot that's full of coffee? I get you! Must be heavy when it's full though!
