Hi, I'm a first year attending UC Davis about to start my third quarter of my first year and I haven't chosen a major yet! Everybody is saying that I don't have to worry about it yet, but I've been looking at the list of majors and for a lot of them I won't be able to finish the major within 4 years unless I start soon. The problem is that I really don't know what major I want to choose. I want to choose something that I'm interested in that is practical, but I guess it's easier said than done. I am actually really interested in Theater, but will I really be able to pay bills with that? That's why I was maybe thinking of just minoring in it. As far as a major, I have no idea!!! Any suggestions?

once you take a few classes you will find out what you want to do while you are in school.

I'll be very honest with you, seeing as I have been friends with a lot of college students that have already graduated. Chances are that if you pick a major that isn't niche and have a lot of people in it, you're most likely not going to get the job that you want right out of college. However, just the fact that you have a degree will usually draw you some attention anyways from business to want to hire you. Go with something that you enjoy, consider that you might not get the job you want right out of college and something that you know you can obtain rather well with your skills. So, don't worry so much about major is practical with your life, worry about what major you can do and be able to get your foot in the door in the first place.

Sometimes it takes time to decide what works for you. I go to NYU and it's going to take me an extra year because I couldn't decide. I switched to political science in what should have been my senior year. Most people at NYU come in and know exactly what they want to do, so I know what you're going through. I switched majors several times before deciding what worked for me. Worst case, you can always change your mind later and go to grad school for something else. You're undergraduate major isn't going to decide what you do for the rest of your life. If you are interested in theater then go for it! Maybe try a double major if you're worried about it. Take intro classes for a few different majors and see if you like them. I took an intro anthropology course my freshmen year, thinking that I would be an anthropologist. I didn't like it as much as I thought I would, and decided to try some other things- dramatic literature, journalism, history, sociology.... Sometimes it just takes a while.

I think people should decide there major before join college. Then they can prepare for it. So batter you decide your major now. As you like theater so you can join there and take it as your major. Then you can do it well. As you like it to do. And i think you can pay bills for that too. So Best of luck!
