Dear friend, I use a laptop and it is known that those current are controlled before it is sent direct to laptop. In the case of desk top too it is known that current voltage may increase and decrease and this affects the computer. May be to control this voltage and backup of current usually UPS is used.

UPS acts as a check basically..what it does is it provides uninterrupted current to your system even when there is a power failure..it provides back ups ranging from 5 mins to 1hr.Though there is no such hard and fast rule that you must have a ups to run your pc,you can even use a surge compressor instead, but its true that your pc can be harmed if there is no ups..especially if the power fluctuates a great extent in the area where you run your pc..Now let's see what happens without a ups the system that you are having right now performs like this:1)You provide current of 220-240v from your wall socket,2)the power enters the SMPS of your machine and gets converted,3)SMPS supplies power to other areas of the sysytem like motherboard,Hard Disk,CD/DVD Drives etc. When the voltage fluctuates or the power goes off the SMPS has to deal with the shock and all the components feels the tremors too..also power is not pure it has several impurities in it which can harm your system if you donj't have a ups or at least a surge compressor..That's why it is better to have a ups..it is wiser to spend a small amount for a ups that will protect your much valuable components.Have a nice computing.

UPS costs only a fraction of what a computer costs, so why take a chance ? i stay in Gujarat which rarely has power cuts, so i did not go for a UPS. But suffered when there was a power cut last year, even though the power came back within 30 minutes, the internet connection could not be accessed, as it was not logged off properly. I had made a few forex trades & could not get out of bad ones in time since internet connectivity was not there. that single day i lost 35 dollars. which is the cost of UPS. I have learned my lesson. I certainly recommend everyone in India to have a UPS.

UPS is used for computers that do not have a backup battery in it. It will not prevent your computer for storing electricity for a few minutes when power failure. For laptop, notebook, net-book, or electronic can use the battery I think not need they've got their own reserves.

It is usually good to use a UPS especially if there are going to be frequent power problems, i have a system for two years now that has no UPS...and i never faced any problems so far. But they say it is bad and that the CPU will get damaged, nothing happened so far...

Many people don't know what UPS is. UPS = Uninterruptibe Power Supply. In school time UPS were translated as Upper Primary School . UPS is mainly used in places where power supply is not reliable. In a country like India the interruptions and fluctuations in power supply are more, UPS will supply power in the case of power failure or law voltages using battery backup. Dedicated Server computers and computers required to run always must be connected to UPS, for additional backup for long hours auto starting power generators also used along with UPS. Power failure to a running computer may cause data loss or disk errors, because of partial writing in disks etc. If you are using a laptop it is not required because Laptop has battery backup. If your power supply is reliable then you don't have to use UPS. If you are using bad quality UPS, that is enough to damage your computer also. Always use 3 pin plugs, and properly earthed power connections. Peace.

Hi, siliguri. If this laptop is running with UPS or not, I would not have any knowledge of it at all. This is something that I will need to find out. I have heard of an UBS cord. But not an UPS. My husband would know all about this since he is the administrator for this laptop. What are the benefits is having an UPS the computer?

Do you mean uninterrupted power supply or something? We used to consider getting one for computer because there were always power interruptions here. However it was much too costly. I guess we just learned to save our files every couple of minutes so that we save something in the event of a power outage...

I don't have a problem and been running my PC off a UPS for five years now, where I live now we are always low or high voltage and either can be fatal to a computer.

Well, if the power gets cut, your PC gets shutdown automatically! If you are programming and you have completed 100 lines without saving and your current goes off, you are gone! If you have a UPS, it can run until you save the program and then you can shutdown with ease. I use an UPS!

Previous, UPS is a necessity because your computer get damage if it was not properly shutdown. On top of that, the work that had been currently done has to be re do if suddenly the power is off and you has not save your work. However, most of the computer (desktop) has advance features and the software programme is more sophisticate and thus, UPS is no longer necessity.

Hello Seems you never faced the real problem, suppose you have typed a page, suddenly the power fails, you have no time to save, all is lost, the UPS battrey can keep your desktop work for some more minutes For laptop/note book we don't need, but keeping it plugged to the mains is good Thanks for post, cheers Prof

I think UPS is necessary for Desk Top computer as PC can not storage battery. Where has electricity problem they must be UPS. Otherwise it will turn shutdown when electricity will go. That time it's harmful for computer. Otherwise not. So it's true as far i know. And right now i am using laptop so i don't need UPS.
