http://www.foxcarolina.com/family/22804697/detail.html A pregnant elephant at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney Australia went into labor on March 1. On March 8 the elephant was still in labor & all signs indicated that the baby had died. Two days later a bouncing baby boy appeared & was up walking a short time later...albeit a little shaky on his legs. Today he is walking & eating on his own & weighs almost 250 pounds. This was the longest labor on record for an elephant. The proud Mom is 18 years old & so PROUD of her little boy!!! He was shown on the local news a few days back & he is the cutest little thing!!! It's funny how small a 250 pound elephant looks...yet a 20 pound human baby looks gigantic. What are you thoughts on this sweet story???

That things shows that animals have feelings too, pretty strong even. They love each other and understand what is happening. I am very happy for the little elephant. i hope the little animal is all right even after the labour. Great story. Something more different to compare with other discussions. thank you for sharing this compassionate story with us.

I'm positive that animals have feelings!!! I can see it when I watch them. My male dog fell in love with my female the very first time he saw her. Now I don't have the heart to separate them!!! I try to find HAPPY stories as a base for my discussions as I get tired of sad stuff!!!

Yeah they are solid weight...lol I am glad it is a joyous occasion instead of a sad one. To much sad stuff going on right now. I am glad he is healthy and up and about. He is a keeper..lol

This is a lovely story, when I was in Africa I would see herds of elephants walking along with their 'children' if small enough walking under their mother or keeing very close//to see them for real is absolutely amazing and baby elephants are so cute....thanks for telling this story you don't often get such lovely ones from the news..LoLo

Hey LadyM! What a wonderful story! And what a strong baby he is! A 250 lb baby is one big boy even for an elephant baby! God Bless him and his Mama for hanging in there! I'll bet she is proud and for having gone through 2 whole days of labor and then delivering a 250 lb baby! She deserves "Mommie of the Century"! I hope they both stay healthy and live a long and wonderful life together! This is such a great story! Thanks for sharing! Hugs, Leslie

OMG Leslie, she went through 9 days of labor before being blessed with her little bundle of joy!!! Elephants don't have much expression in their faces, but she was watching him with such love & pride in here eyes that it couldn't be missed!!!

That is amazing and unbelievible! I have never heard of a story like this before! First off I can't believe that elephant was in labor that long and didn't do anything to help the mother elephant! how that baby elephant survived to come in this world in even more amazing! I hope baby "Mr Shuffles" gets better and stronger everyday! He is one amazing elephant!

He's getting stronger & more independent EVERY day!!! I don't think they'll be calling him Mr Shuffles for very long. He will probably demand to have his OWN, stronger name soon!!!

I've never been in labor; but the thought of having labor pains for more than one week, made me double over!!! I unsuccessfully tried to find the video on this. The baby was struggling to walk & the Mom was steadying him against her leg & slowly walking with him. It looked soooo sweet. And to think in kess than a week, he's out roaming on his own!!!
