Do you help the poor?

Here in our school, we always have this fund raising wherein students donate money, clothes, canned goods, noodles, and other things that will be useful to the needy. Eventhough we are still students, we still try to keep in mind to help those who suffered in calamities. Whenever we see people who are in need of food, clothes and shelter, we feel bad and at the same time fortunate to live comfortably without having to worry about our basic needs since it has already been provided by our parents. I sometimes pity them eventhough I know that they do not need my pity. I really want to help them so what we do is to participate in the fund raising held in our school. What about you? How do you help the needy?

schools really try to help those who are under calamities and those who really needs help. its not just for the sake of grades. the school's mission and vision helps why they really help the needy. it also helps students' way of thinking and attitude towards helping the poor and the needy. i like it very much. since i was in preparatory school, we have always been doing that in our school. the teacher frankly says we do not get anything for grades if we help, she calls for our hearts to help. that is not helping if you wait for something in return. i learned from it so until now i help in whatever way i can. thanks to my foundation school.

I keep a small basket of canned food and a can opener and some plastic utensils. That way I can just give them food when I see them. My aunt knew a person that would dress her kids up in ragged clothes and have them sit on the corner to get some money. They had a house and everything. So since I heard about that, I keep the basket. That way I know that they are getting food instead of using money for something they shouldn't.

That is also what me and my other classmates do. Instead of money, give them food or something useful such as clothes.

Hi, I personally get involved with this kind of projects however throughout the years I do not want dole outs anymore because this make some people to rely on others to give them that's what I call a "beggar's mentality". I am more into social entrepreneurship where I partner with someone to establish a business and train these out of work people and employ them there. That way they become useful and that gives them a sense of pride and dignity.

When I see someone standing outside with a sign I give them what I can $1-$5. I think it is very important to treat others how we want to be treated. We never know if and when we could be in their same situation!

Yes, we also do this in schools during Christmas and October. When there are calamities too, our teachers would ask us to donate in cash or kind to help victims. It's a good way of teaching students the value of generosity.

Hello Bestylsih, It is in human nature to help the poor because we are driven by our itellect and we form the emotion "pity" for them. This does not only apply for the poor. Ist of all, I am happy to read your comment about "they don't need my pity". This is really true and I'm glad you don't think that way. Most people who view it like that ends up just viewing those who's in need "loser, low life, unsucessful, etc". It's good to stay astray from this and simply tell yourself, these people just lack some stuff because of whatever reason and just simply support because you care and wish them a better/safer/happier place. I want to thanks you and your school for your supporting cause. People like you are helping others who can't provide themselves, a second chance at life. The best part is that you don't really win anything here, simply just the happy thoughts that you'll be helping those who are in needs. I, myself as a college student loves runing non-profit community events that helps those who are in need. If you wish to participate in these events, school is a good place to start; check out local public places such as a chruch or museum and they can hook you up with projects. Hope that helps. God bless you.

Same as the discussion starter.I help those poor people by donating in our school.I really hate the feeling when I see beggars and pass by them I dont have the chance to help them by giving them shelter.I badly want to be filthy rich so when I see those people I can help them immediately. :/
