How do you Know you Believe if you Dont Study It

This week I have found myself feeling a bit irritated with fellow Christians, I still love them though, but my problem is these people who spout their beliefs without actually reading the bible, then they say my priest said. I am not Catholic, and have nothing against them what-so-ever, however of the 26 Catholics I have spoken to (and yes I counted) only one could tell me what he believed and why it is so by not only quoting scripture and knowing actual information, Rolandinu was the only one who could answer questions, could show me research or any of that stuff. There was another who admitted she was Catholic but did not know a lot, however the other ones said to non-believers, the priest said so and so and such and such but fail to back up anything and then they tell these people you should just believe without study, you should just believe without knowing the bible, you should just believe without having any idea of why you do it, because the priest said so. I am not being mean but it is making one of the oldest religions sound like a cult, that they really believe that they should believe in something they dont study, dont understand, and dont fully get but because some man, some priest told them it is so then they believe, then they go on to misquote the bible. So anyway yesterday, I sat down with a Catholic priest, and asked him questions in an effort to get a handle on what he was teaching. He misquoted the bible several times and added his own meanings to the bible several times, in places where the meaning was explained after the passage, his was quite different. And if you point these things out to him, he got mad and he said that you are supposed to believe what he said because God put him over people and he is in charge. When I asked him if this is what he taught his parishoners he said yes, and I told him it was blatantly wrong, and he told me I should believe him to because he had authority to teach this from the Pope, (not God) and the Pope is holy so he knows everything. So I asked normal questions about the faith after that which he could only answer a few questions, and I asked him about the rules of the church, he could answer that in length, with scripture. I asked about what the church says and he gave me a long list that if people did not do them they would be kicked out of the religion. There was just so many bad points to this meeting, I know that many Catholics will say that this was just one priest, however he was from a group of 300 priests in the area, that were taught in the same place. These gave 4 masses on Sunday in a church with enough room for 500 people that seemingly was packed, so that makes 2000 people a day who were getting wrong information, who are teaching thier children this same information, who are going to grow up and pass on this wrong information, because they believe and they dont have to prove, which means they dont have to actually read the bible they just need to believe in it. So please someone here tell me why this is please.

I was born a Catholic and grew up as one as well. However, when I turned 17 I began to ask questions that cannot be answered by anyone in our church. I've been a part of Choir in our Church and also a commentator. I used to read the Scipture in front of a large crowd. Our Church has some practices and also beliefs that I don't agree with. That's when I began to doubt my Religion. I was 17 years old during that time and was studying in a very liberal school. I met a lot of different people with different beliefs(Agnostic, Atheist, Christians, Baptists, Devouted Catholics, Protestants, etc.). There was even a time that I began to ask if there is really God. In the end I have still chosen to believe in God. However, with a lot of Reigions that were introduced to me I became so confused until I've decided to just stay away from them and live a life of an Agnostic (believing in God but not practicing a Religion). I'm still a Catholic as I was born as one but I don't practice it.

I understand as I started out a Muslim, I was pretty good for a while believing all the stuff I was told until I started studying and I found out the worse stuff imaginable. I could not believe any of the things in the religion, not to say that it is wrong for anyone to do it but, I personally was able to prove it wrong for me in so many places that my faith was severely shaken, if I ever had any. However I soon learned that I could and would research for myself, and I would teach myself, then once I learned I did Seminary and every since that I have been studying and writing about the Word of God or teaching it, you don't have to be without learning and someone will help you to understand, however I have noticed many Catholics are ill prepared to do that, because the priest is failing to give them a proper education, not because they want one, I am finding. Many just are afraid to ask questions especially from a church that can excommunicate you.

That is exactly my point Ladyslipper, I am always here to answer questions, and if I dont know the answer I will research it for you. Because it is so important to me that you are able to understand, especially since when I started out it was a problem for me as well. Listen if anyone reading this is a Pastor, if you don't answer the members of your flocks questions, you will lose him or her and that person will become an outspoken person against the church taking many with them. The reason is because, you decided to not bother teaching them properly. Now that said, if anyone has a question, I am going to answer because I take God seriously.

I can still remember when I asked someone from a church about a certain verse in the bible I can't really understand. The only answer given to me is that lucky are those who believe even if they don't understand. That was my question actually. How would I be able to believe something that I don't understand and confuses me. It bothered me and I started to doubt my faith. I also felt guilty because I was thought then that thinking about those things, not believing and having doubts is evil. I even got depressed at some point until I talked to one of my friends. She's also a Catholic and I found out that I'm not alone in the situation I'm in. We began talking to each other and then I began studying the bible my self. I have read the entire bible when I was still 11 years old but I have not really undertand it. As of now, I am still a Catholic just for the sake of having a Religion but honestly, Religion is no longer that important to me. People would always tell me that it's important because it's in the Bible. But then, I choose to believe what I believe and as long as I believe in God and I have a good heart that's what's important to me now.

Ronaldinu is very succint. You talk to him and you get the feeling he knows his beliefs and he studies. I have come across a few Catholic people here (and I'm not saying they aren't) that claim to be Catholic, but yet how they "speak" and what language they use doesn't add up to what they say they believe. Sadly, the same can be said for Christians. I admire your guts to interview the priest and not shy away from pointing out inconsistences. I just know I'm going to get blasted for this response.

Unfortunately, "Christian" leaders who teach the bible or who have read the bible seem to be more of the exception than the rule. Almost every church I went to twists the word in order to further their own agenda, whether it is controlling people or appearing more righteous. Jesus himself has challenged the pharisees for something like that. I would have someone tell me "well The bible says,... so you are not a Christian." Then I would look up that very verse and get a feel of the whole context and the point of the message in the scripture. Often times, the scriptures they used to attack me often turned around and condemned them. I read the whole bible and I payed close attention to it and... I'm wondering, did any pastor, or preacher read the bible?

Hi, Pastor.... You have asked these days a very interested and curious questions. This is not only your question. It's all peoples questions. i am a person who believes " believe is pure poison" Gautama the Buddha said: Believe nothing because, a. a wise man said it, b. the belief is generally held, c. it is written in ancient books, d. it is said to be divine origin, e. some one else believes it. but believe only that you yourself judge to be true.

That is very interesting thank you. However I believe the bible is of divine origin but you are right I do get to judge it to be true for myself, so I guess I completely agree with you.
