I liked their older work (backk when Tarja was the singer) much more than the new one. What do you think?

I admit that I am not very familiar with Nightwish as many others here, but I first heard of them when MCA-Universal (Universal Music Group) was about to sign them. However, before that happened, that was when Tarja found herself ousted from the group, & therefore, Tarja started her solo career & got signed instead. It seems that apparently, you're not the only one. I wonder if things were reversed, what people would say. What I mean is that if Anette was the original singer, & Tarja took her place.

You have a good point there. What is it was reverse? Then people will say who is the robotic sound singer nightwish just hired? Are Toumas out of his mind. But from what I look at Youtube comment, there was even a lot of Nightwish fans critic Tarja when she was still in the band. So people will never satisfied until they get something to criticise.

Oops - sorry, marcmm. I didn't know about your reply to my post until just now. In music history, when there has been a change in the band, it seems that their sound &/or style in some way or another also changes. Sometimes, it's noticeable, but not always. It is almost always noticeable when it's the singer that gets changed, & quite often, people seem to prefer the original singer. A good example is when Black Sabbath's singer changed from Ozzy Osbourne to Ronnie James Dio. Two entirely different voices, two entirely different styles. There was not really a comparison. Quite a few people preferred Ozzy. However, Dio did already have a fan base from when he was with Rainbow. I know someone who actually auditioned to take Tarja's place, & that was when I first heard of Nightwish. It seems to be the same situation here. Tarja actually studied classical music, & got her experience there. Annette has a lot of experience in popular music. Then, it's pretty much genetics on the sound of their voices. I believe that the band actually wanted a different sound & not a carbon copy of Tarja.

They're both great singers, and I like them both. That said, I think Annette's better for the band -- it's like Tuomas feels free to really show off what Marco can do vocally. And I'd still be waiting for them to come to the US if Tarja was still there.

i liked nightwish when tarja was the vocalist, i like nightwish with annette as vocalist. annete is a good singer, tarja too, maybe why ppl prefer tarja so much is bcause of her opera singer background. excuse my english and my eventual flaws.

I have been watching their live performance and Anette seems slightly less able to perform live - she sounds good on the CD though :)

I don't know how the new songs would sound like if they were sung by Tarja though. They are still on my list, anyway.

I think Tarja was so unique while Anette has a voice which doesn't make Nightwish different from other bands. But I love the new Nightwish so much, although it cannot be compared with the previous Nightwish...

people are not that perceptive when changes happen. even though they were great with Tarja, Anette is a great asset and their songs with her are totally amazing, i love their new style! and i keep seeing posts where it sais that now with Anette, is just another band. that's not true. their sound is still theirs, and the songs from Dark passion play are madly good!

It's not the songs that are worse than before, it's the live performance that got hurt a little bit, I think. They don't give the same shivers any more.

I've tried to decide who's better in my opinion and couldn't do that, heh.. Eventually both singers are great, I guess. Tarja is clearly more experienced and her voice is more trained than Anette's, and I think it took some time for Anette to 'get into business' (the very first shows of Nightwish with Anette didn't sound very good to me but now she performs well!) And in addition they both sing two completely different styles.. maybe there's not really any option to compare

I don't think it's experience related - Anette is not really that young.

Well, it was not the vocal that made me listen to nightwish, I was the music first. But back then, I prefered the voice of Tarja and the music at that time too.

to be honestly, i like both, but you knoe, they are differents and their voices are uniques, of course, tarja has something special when she sings, but anette is not too bad, i like her{ voice and she has something different in her lookk if we compare both, i think both gave to the band what the band needed in this moment, but i really like both.

Anette is rather a pop singer. I liked "follow" me she sang with Pain. I mean those kind of songs are best for her. Tarja is best suitable for Nightwish. Anette tries to sing her songs, but ends up ruining them. She wants sang Nemo. Oh god, she was sounding like chipmunk. Even her breathing was visible in the song. As for Tarja, I dont want her to sing pop songs. It is just not for her.

You're so right. I've seen both old and new Nightwish in concerts. Anette is awful when she tries to do Tarja's songs, and she was booed (!) when she tried to play Sleeping Sun. On the other hand, I'd rather not see Tarja play Amaranth...

Tarja of course.. With Anette the band sounds like most of the bands. With Tarja the Nightwish' sound was unique , aggressive and somehow even heavenly. I'm not saying that Anette is a bad singer, she is a pretty good one,but compared with Tarja...not so much...She still has a lot to learn. Cheers!

I like them both, for me Nightwish is not only Tarja or Annette. Nightwish is a band and live with one feeling. May be Tarja have a great vocal and its very difficult to Anette to reach Tarja's style, but Anette have her own style. Imagine what about if Anette is the first singer of Nightwish ? It doesnt matter, Nightwish is a Nightwish. The band will still alive.

I agree with you, I like Tarja's voice way more than Anette's. I don't know why, but Anette's sounds a little too... generic? I don't really know how to describe it.

Both are good. Annette is for the new sound while tarja for the classic Nightwish. Just cannot wait for their new album to come out. I wonder how will they sound. Maybe the critic will be different after the second album with Annette.
