My beautiful Opal, a maltese shih tzu cross, decided at 2am this morning that she was feeling peckish. It didn't matter that earlier in the evening, she ate more than her younger sister Cleo. Before I continue, I should mention that Opal (picture) is 10 1/2 yrs old. I adopted her last year in February from NSW Animal Rescue, aged about 10 yrs. She has brought more joy and humour into my home ever since. But this morning was the funniest yet. I was nibbling on a carrot, and Opal wanted to see what I was eating, so I jokingly gave her a piece.. thinking that piece is going to end up in the compost bin as no doubt she'll reject it. Low and behold, she happily chews it..and this was a crisp carrot, so the crunches were loud! I give her another piece, she chews that! By the time Opal finished her snack, she had eaten a whole good sized carrot!!! It's not the first time I've had dogs with unusual appetites. My other furbaby Cleo, also a maltese x shih tzu and the reason I adopted Opal to be her companion, even if Cleo is only about 6 yrs, and I adopted her about 5 yrs ago from Companions 4 Life... anyway, she also has unusual tastes! She will eat any fruit I give her..with the exception of apples. But she's eaten pineapples, watermelon, strawberries, mangoes, even oranges and lemons! There is nothing she won't try. Her favourite food is boiled cabbage, but she's also known to eat it raw. She loves fish more than meat! And it leads me to wonder, how many more funny stories out there with dogs and their unusual tastes? What do your dogs like to snack on when it's not a normal mealtime?

My Artemis is newly adopted from the pound. I do not know yet her tastes on food but she has happily swallowed all the healthy chicken broth concoctions i gave her. I will try some of your food snacks on my huge Artemis.

Do what I've done with my two, when she is curious to see what you are eating, let her taste a tiny bit, treat it as if it's a treat, it'll make her more excited to taste it. :)

I have all kinds of stories about the basset hound that my dad used to have. He was a walking garbage disposal permanently set to "on". But as for me, the unusual food stories are all about cats. I had one who would walk all over me to get to a piece of bread I was eating. My cat Tiger loves plastic and especially styrofoam. And we cannot leave curling ribbon around because of Jason.

Good to see you again Dawn. :) My Middy (Midnight) was like that. He was the feline goat of the family and would eat anything and everything. LOL He's since passed and I miss him dearly, but it's nice to have a cat now that doesn't ambush me for every meal I'm about to eat. Chloe is too much of a lady for that. lol

It's not good to feed your dog peanutbutter, but if you ever have you know how funny it is to watch them eat it. I don't think it's bad for them but it's can't be good for them to eat anything that sticky. Once in a while one of the kids slips a little to our dog, of course when I catch them they are in big trouble. But it's very hard no to laugh at the dog.

I've given my furbabies peanut butter, I think small amounts is ok, and you're right, it's very funny to watch them eat it! LOL
