I know that it helps impede the amount of sweat you produce. go and shave your underarms then you'll see that you will be sweating more (do not put on deoderant before or after, to keep the experiment a bit neutral). it can also signify adulthood/maturation, provide warmth... just what i think. interesting. i never really thought of this.
