Could Earth Hour really save the planet

Hey guys, im sure that most of you did participate in Earth Hour by turning off your lights and everything. During that 1 hour I can see the lights around my housing area are off.....although some people did not turn off their lights. But what I can also see is that people are lighting up candles. I thought that it would not do much of a damage. But then when i check the newspapers I can see ever more and more candles lighted up. I saw a restaurant where they turn off the light during Earth Hour but lighting up lots of candles. I even read an article saying that more than 10,000 candles were lighted up during Earth Hour. Does Earth hour really work? People off their lights but people also light candles, lots of candles, and it releases carbon dioxide which is bad for the environment. I think it's really stupid, you off the lights and light up a few candles. So what do you guys think, Could Earth Hour really save the planet?

Earth hour can only work if people are doing things to help that they can actually control. Turning off your lights isn't doing anything. Just because you turn off your lights, doesn't mean the power companies shut down. They're still using up resources making power, that you're not using. Whether you use it or not, its still being put out. It will save you some money, but do nothing for the environment.

I think it can help. We all use more enegry than we should and even an hour or two where people are shutting off lights I think will help. I would like this to happen more often myself and think we should do it like more once a month or every few weeks if at all possible. I think that if we can make a difference together this would be great. That is my thoughts on this. Take care and happy mylotting to you.

hi! i also turned off my lights during earth hour. most people in the neighborhood were not really active participants, but i just did what i felt was right. do not take this literally though, but Earth Hour was not merely created to 'save the planet'. it's more of a symbolic act that raises awareness for climate change. there was even an article i've read somewhere that it doesn't even significantly change anything for just one night of putting out the lights for an hour. anyways, it's like a protest or the people's plea to fight against destructive forces of man, in favor for mother earth. once we have the people's attention, the next step is to educate folks to do an upgrade to eco-friendly appliances, cfl bulbs and the whole deal of conserving energy. with that said, and to answer your question -- no, it doesn't save the planet -- but we should understand why such campaigns exist.

Earth hour helps in conserving energy. Fossil takes million of years to form. And as we know, fossil fuel is the most used energy in the form of electricity. If we will not conserve energy,we're costing high demands for fossil fuel. Not only it will harm the environment, but it can cause economic crisis once fossil fuel has shortage. Prices would go up due to high demands and the next generations would suffer.

yea i agree Earth Hour does help in conserving energy but people are burning thousands of candle.....we conserve some energy and at the same the we are heating up the earth by burning thousands or maybe even millions of candles during earth hour

thank you for turning off your lights and not using candles. It really help mother Earth. But i just don't get it, people turn off their lights and instead they use candles. Burning releases CO2 and heats up the earth. We don't even have enough trees to absorb the CO2 and they are burning candles.

I have the same thought like you. At first I thought Earth Hour is a good project and at least it can remind some people to cherish our earth. However, more people lit up candles and some even celebrated it and regarded it as a party. It is a bigger waste. It means this project meaningless. I love China

We didn't turn off our lights or anything. I figured no one would be up for it so I didn't bother suggesting it either. I don't think the candles would've done too much of a harm though. I want a greener world, so I think an hour isn't really enough maybe two or three hours and when it's daytime for everyone.

I live in Jakarta,Indonesia and we also participated in Earth Hour. Actually, it is a symbolic act that raises awareness in society about how important it is to save our earth, but it doesn`t mean one hour without light will save the earth then everything`s done, of course not.Hopefully, we can start saving the earth from our small act starting from home, like turn off the light if we don`t need it, use more public transport or bike instead of private car, reduce plastic bag etc.

yea i kinda agree. Earth Hour is just to raise awareness and help reduce the consumption of the Earth's resources. I hope that Earth Hour will soon change to something else. Not turning off lights but maybe no vehicles on roads for an hour. Oh yea....for next year Earth Hour(if they are turning off the lights again) they really should remind people DO NOT LIGHT UP CANDLES.

Well, at least a lot are volunteering to do something about our Global concern. I can't be a hypocrite about this since -- well, i use electricity a lot for stuff like the internet, TV and ummm... stuff. I see other alternatives but this is a good start :) It all starts with a good start.

it does not help that much helping to protect earth during that hour. but its working when it comes to sending humanity a message that we really have to do our part in perserving our planet. most of us know how bad is the situation of our planet right now, problem is we are not aware how serious it is. implementing earth hour sends that message to everyone around the world and its time to do something about our planet.

Setting 'Earth Hour' is undoubtly a good decision for our planet. It can apeal peoples' attention to pay attention to the earth. As for lighting candles, it just using another ways to burden the enviroment instead of using electrical appliance. All in all, the role of Earth Hour is nothing but arousing peoples' consciousness.

Earth Hour as you said many people lit a lot of candles during the earth hour and yes they release carbon dioxide but I think the earth hour would have a much better effect if the people do it much willingly. for example one would do a job with a great efficiency if he really likes to do the job or the task given to him. earth hour must be done with such interest without the feeling that its compulsory or with a fear that what others might think if one doesn't switch off lights during earth hour. if people are asked to do some small things like switching off their vehicle engines when they are in a traffic jam this a is a very small thing to do but by switching off our engines we have two main benefits one you can save up to 20% fuel and two the amount of exhaust released by the car is reduced. some things like this can have a equal effect with the earth hour.

no matter what, no matter how small it is, our effort is worth to make the world better. it is better not to turn the candles on too, just use the moon shine then..:)

i dont think it could just save the planet. but these kind of efforts just tell the people about the problem which could arise in future. it just tell that there is a need of combined effort by people. alone no government and country can do any thing. there is a need of effort of the world population.

I'm so certain that it would..if only all countries doing it....Have you ever felt that when it rains, the air feel more refreshed but after that comes the polution and the air becomes thick again...I feel that almost everyday and I really believe the earth has its own regenerative power if only we human let it be for a while..Even one day could help.

I'm in favor of earth hour. It helps conserve energy. mostly used fuel is fossil fuel. if we dont conserve energy,we might wake up one day with a lot of inconvenience due to energy shortage. If we lessen our energy consumption, the demand for fossil fuel will lessen too. Which is advantageous not only for the environment but for the next generations as well. happy blogging! :)
