The Middles, casting of daughter

I watch The Middles on occasion now that Mercy is not presently on, hope it hasn't been canceled. I just can't help but wonder just what the casting call for the daughter said. Maybe something like: Casting: Mid-teen girl, plain to ugly(ugly Betty type), willing to exploit shortcomings and act foolish in part. What do you think it would have said?

I have seen the actress who plays the daughter in other things on television and she does not look quite like that. They have put exaggerated braces and unflattering hair on her on The Middle. She's really just an average looking girl in real life.

I assumed she looked better than on the show but still they would have to work really hard on a very beautiful girl to get her to look like that. But she does a great job in the role and must have a lot of self confidence to play it.
