Do not choose the lesser evil

Richard Gordon said it best, "Do not choose the lesser evil." In the Philippine 2010 election, we should not limit ourselves to the two most popular candidates for a position. Voters get a defeatist attitude going to polls telling themselves that Candidate A or B will win anyway, might as well vote for one of them and not waste my vote on a tail-ender. Our vote is our voice. This is of course easy to say about national election where there is abundant information, right or wrong, about candidates. This is difficult to implement on a local level as there is a dearth of information on them. Nevertheless, it is our responsibility. Do you take the time to get to know the local candidates? Or do you vote based on their party affiliation or the endorsement of popular people or friends? Will you vote for a candidate even though you think he has absolutely no chance of winning the election? Let me hear your opinions.

Choosing the lesser evil is both logical and Christian advice. Otherwise, the electorate will go crazy. It is the process of eliminating the undesirable candidates from a list. As to the local candidates, there is no easier recourse but to really study their fliers. I read one whose name is preceded with Dr. But nowhere in his credentials did it say he was a doctor. His siblings were doctors and he took a medical course. He never passed the board!

richard gordon can be a good president. he is very capable as any candidate. but election is about winning. election is about connecting to people so that they will vote for the candidate. gordon may be the best candidate there is, but he simply could not connect with the voters. his public relations team has a lot to catch up to make his campaign reach the voters and favor his side. i will vote for him this coming election.

You nailed it! I have always found him to be a capable and reasoned senator, I just cannot understand why he cannot get ahead. You're right, he just does not connect with the voters. I like his and Bayani's brand of governance though, leadership with political will.

Gordon is one of the few people who has the ability to initiate change. He offers tried and tested solutions however it's going to be an uphill climb come election day.

I just hope he gets to the top before May 10.

Very true. Do not vote based only on what the surveys are telling, or who is popular. Vote with conviction that this person will make our nation be back to its honor, with dignity and pride. I am also thankful of what fair and standard broadcasting of GMA does so that every Presidentiables be aired and be made known to public eye. I have selected a President based on what I have researched, heard on fair broadcasters both in radio and television because in this way, I may know whom to vote. We will be held responsible if someone who sits as President will also be corrupt or immoral or hiding something. I just hope that the Filipino people would be wise enough if they really are tired of poverty and corruption in the country. I have tried intelligent people from the past, some celebrity already seated before but was cut off, but this time, I will cast my vote to a person who is always being pitied small because they say he cannot do anything about the country because he was like this and that only. I will vote for the person whom they say has no means to win, but with respect, I believe He is the only one fitted because of His love to this nation, his Fear to God and compassion for the people. I will still vote for Bro. Eddie Villanueva. I respect others candidates here. We need not to fight or criticize one's decision.

I've heard that the commercial was also made his volunteers as well. it's commendable because they believed him. i watch his shows every weekend night, relating issues to the government. It's unfair that even candidates like him are being treated unfairly by media. by the way I ADMIRE him fornot backing out on DEBATES.now that's a MAN...

I agree to what you've said. I would vote and support my candidate even if I honestly know that he/she won't win. It's about standing for what you believe is right. Although the concept of the electorate is a popular mandate and I know that my candidate is not popular to get that much votes, I'll still voice out my opinion. It's beyond winnability, it's more of proving a point.

I wish though that there would be a way to make him more acceptable to the voting public. It's just a waste of talent.

Sorry, I conveyed the wrong idea. I was thinking that there should be a way to market lesser known candidates without compromising or abandoning their values and principles.

There are ways to make people like Gordon, Teodoro and Fernando be more acceptable to the public. But that means abandoning the right thing to do, abandoning their principles and allowing to be swept away by the withering not to mention stinking political system of the country. Sad to say, too much democracy often makes a fool out of us. The power of democracy is great but comes with it is a greater responsibility. It seems that we, as a country, is not yet ready to receive such democracy. We haven't learn from the previous EDSA revolution. Politicians are more like dancers, they dance to the tune that the majority plays.

I vote according to what or whom i think is the best among the candidates well at least the best in my opinion, i dont give a damn about what party he may be or whose with him at all ,what matters to me is that he passed my own set of qualification and hes got what it takes to take the challenge to be the next president. I will give you a hint those 2 top camdidates are not at all my choice, i dont go for popular presidents anyways what we need is someone whose determined someone whose got the skill not the appeal alone.Sadly those two of top are more on whose more popular than whose more capable...

Are you talking about Perlas and delos Reyes? :) just kidding. Good for you, that's the right way to use your one vote. I wish a lot of us will use our common sense in voting. Alas, we all know that is not just the case. What about your local candidates, have you made your choice?

Yup i already made my ruling with my local candidates not that much though because we have almost the same faces running again. Promising the same thing a few years ago but you can only see them visible during campaign period.I just wish political conditioning in this country change for the better sometime soon. Enough bout the popular presidents,no wonder we are still in the 3rd world category up until now because we choose those nothing but popularity candidates every now and then

i will definitely vote for him if i had the chance - i was not able to register so i guess i am out of the game! but then i sure hoped to have registered and be heard, even if he does not win, i still think he has the chance! everyone has the chance and i am sure the Philippines need more than a lier who keeps telling people he is from the mass, and i am even more sure that this country is better off than have a president who was only pursuaded to run because his mother prayed and loved this country. I don't care who wins, or lose... but i just cared about the people's mind being twisted in some silly election game - why does everybody in this country shells out millions of pesos just to become a public servant!

True, even Perlas and delos Reyes have a good chance too, even though not a lot of people know them. The good thing about technology nowadays is that if used properly, and intelligently, these unknown but more qualified candidates will have a chance.

Those lesser evil candidate has the more chance of becoming the opposite. It's not about who's the lesser evil but it's about who can inspire or motivate people in our sick country. We need a leader that can uplift our spirits and do remarkable things. What the use of an intelligent leader if he/she doesn't connect to the people? It can only add our problems more. The ideal leader is the one that can unite it's people and those whose around him.If this candidates cannot unite a party or cannot gather a lot of people why waste my vote on them? Where from the start they have failed me.

Who among the candidate do you think has the best chance of uniting us? That's true, it would be useless to have the world's most intelligent leader if he is the wedge that divides the country.

When a candidate deserves my vote, I will give it to him. I won't go for popularity. I will have my voice heard by casting my vote for the people who I believe deserve my precious vote. For instance, for President, I am casting my vote for Gordon because I believe in his capability to lead the country. Ergo, I will vote for him to let my voice be heard by everybody that he is who I want for president.

That's the spirit! I think that's what Gordon wants to know that we will not be swayed by surveys and instead vote after reflecting intelligently.

My president for this election is Gordon but my mother advised me to vote for Noynoy instead because she believes that Gordon will not win. o told her that if all Gordon's voters will think of that and do that, what will happen? all those votes will be wasted. i am firm with my president so i will not change my mind. this is a democratic country so let us just vote who we think is good and let the truth come.

That's the spirit! It's really not a good idea to join the bandwagon just to prevent the more evil one to win. If we all do that, Erap might return to Malacanang! Our vote is our voice. Even if our opinion is contrary to the public's opinion, we should still make ourselves be heard. That is responsible voting.
