Many people believe that when Charlotte Brontë created the character of Jane Eyre it was really a way of her coming to terms with parts of her own life. The character certainly often voices Charlotte's, what were then, radical opinions on religion, social class and the difference between the sexes. In fact Brontë actually said "I will show you a heroine as plain and as small as myself", when she was creating the character of Jane Eyre. Charlotte uses the character of Jane Eyre to show her story’s main theme - a journey through growth and change. Incidentally you may be interested in a prequel to Jane Eyre which tells the story of Bertha. The book is 'The Wide Sargasso Sea' by Jean Rhys and is very good.

I read it long ago and I liked it very much. But as far as women's role in society back then in relation to Jane's character, I can't say I was every very good at literary interpretation...
