vob ifo

i have 1 huge .vob file - without any smaller ones. i cant seem to make .ifo files or .bup files out of it. i have vob edit, and ifo edit, but they dont do anything - or are they compatitble with vista? usually when you run vob edit, its suppossed to be doing something right? do i need to split the large .vob file into smaller ones? when i run 'create ifos' in ifo edit, i get the message: "could not find any vob files in vob file(s). any help? thanks. i would preferably like a free method to getting the ifos and bups i need.
