I want to be an independent singer

I have these desires and I really want to get them accomplished within 2 years. I would like to be a published author and a singer, for the singer not looking for internationl stardom, but something on a level where I would have some fans and would be able to do some small concerts if I wanted to. I was thinking though the easiest thing to do is a holiday album which I want to do anyway and then do some singles until I get enough money and material to do an album with perhaps the singles and new songs. Anyone else out there has this desire and if so how are you gonna approach it?
