Powder makeup or Liquid makeup/foundation...what's the diff?

The new "fashion" in makeup these day is the powder style of makeup...instead of the liquid for foundation and makeup to the face. But is it just powder over liquid foundation, or is it foundation in and of itself or is it a thicker powder for extra coverage to the liquid foundation? I have been using the i.d./Bare Minerals powder. Originally on its own, but it just didn't seem to give a good coverage. So I started back with the Lorel and Mabeline brands of liquid foundation, anti aging version of liquid makeup/foundation, then the Bare Minerals on top of that, then blush. All are done very lightly and specifically so as to not have any "build up". Question: What's the point of the "new" powders if they can't cover on their own? Or am I making them to be more than they are? Are they just a powder that just has a bit more to it than powders we have used in the past? I have the Bare Minerals, and then recently bought Physicians Formula loose powder...thinking it was the kind in place of liquid makeup/foundation. And I see no difference. So..got any suggestions, comments or make up tips to go along withe these new powder makeups? Dure would like to hear them!

My problem with powders is they are very finiky. To much and they make my face look like a"muddy", not enough and they do nothing. I have been very dilligent in applying the corrector or concealer as needed and then a very light liquid foundation (anti wrinkle of course) and then the powder - Bare Minerals or Physicians Formula - and literally start with barely none and work my way up proper coverage. To much and I get "muddy" again, not enough, and all the imprefection show through. Since you use powder foundations..what brand do you use? I have been wondering if the Bare Minerals is to "thick". Then I wonder ..since the Physicians Formula says "powder" is it doing what I need it to do for coverage? Then I have the problem..where it looks just perfect in the bathroom mirror and makeup mirror I use, but once outside..I look in the mirror of my car visor and I look like I put on every bit of makeup and blush that I have!!!
