I usually travel light. This means I only have a hand-carry back pack/sports bag that fits in the plane compartment.

I always check in some baggage when I travel by air. I try to travel as lightly as possible. My toddler son is disabled. I need to take catheters for him, diapers and formula soy milk drums. Now my baby daughter is here I will travel with her too. So on my next trip I will carry luggage for myself, my three year old son and my one year old daughter. On a normal airline I can take about 20kg of luggage to check in and 5 kg of hand baggage. When I travel on a budget airline they only allow 15kg of luggage to check in. That gets a high fee. The cheapest way on that type of flight is to take hang baggage only. I have a large backpack, a day backpack and a hang bag when I go off traveling.

i also travel lite, but when i need a few x-tra things for a week or so i take my bag up to the door of the plane when boarding and drop it off there that way i know it's going to be on "that" plane and not wind up somewhere else. ive lost camera's, watches, and numerous other goodies by checking luggage to baggage handlers and never got anything back now all my goodies go in one bag that i keep at my side.
