Which is a true friend?

This is just a hypothetical question... Which would you consider as a true friend? Is it the one who is always there with you to laugh with, talk with, and go places with OR the one who's not always there with you but you know you can count on during your "down" times? (This is supposing, of course, that a friend can only be either of those.)

The second one is better. People wants you when they're happy. But in the down time, you're on your own. Your hang out friend would say, "I have my own problem you know. Don't bother me." While true friend will help you solve the problem whatever s/he can do for you. There are some other qualities of true friends. But that's in another discussion:)

So then, it is possible to consider a stranger as a true friend as long as he/she had been there for you during troubled times. But, you cannot call a "friend" someone you've shared your happiness and memories with if he/she has never been there for you on your struggles. Is this right?

Hmm, interesting. At first you ask which one of the quality of friend should i chose, people who are in happiness and not in the down, the second one is vice versa. I choose the second one, in which i've experienced all my friends gone when i'm down on the wheel, but they've got back again when i've managed to shake off my problem. Yes, true friends can come in form of strangers, couple, or even dogs! To define true friends, i myself give 4 qualities: -s/he will be there when you're up or down -s/he willing to sacrifice something for you even it is costly for him/her -s/he accept you like you are, NOT what you have now. -they may not always sweet-talk to you, but whatever they say or do, it is for your best.

for me true friend is the who is not always there with you but you know you can count on during your "down" times... it is a true identity of a friend for me,, a friend who is only there in the "ups" of your life is never a true friend.. how can you need them if you know they are not willing help in the "downs" of your life...

So a friend is someone you "need"?

Of course, for me a true friend is someone you can count on. Someone that can help you in your problems. I don't need someone who is always there along with you only in good times. I need someone who can cheer me up when I am feeling down. That's what a real friend is. He/she needs not to be present all the times and having fun with you, whats important is his presence when you are in trouble or facing a big problem in your life.

Does that mean that those you spend good times with are not your friends...?

I need a friend where I can count on specially at my down times. You can't obviously call "friend" those who were there for only good times. A true friend will always be there at your side no matter what.
